Horizons Some thoughts on missions and factions.

I was thinking while jumping between systems... wouldn't it be more realistic and more fun to build up rep with a faction/factions and then have other factions climb over each other to employ your services based on your reputation for getting the job done? Lure you away to go work for them? I mean, in the real world if you're good at a job, have a good CV etc, you're pretty much sought after with companies willing to snap you up based on your work experience or reputation. Whereas in ED, doesn't matter how good you become with a faction, or several, other's aren't interested until you build rep with them, which seems a little unrealistic. You could be the best bounty hunter, hauler, smuggler etc but show up at a new station and it's like nobody knows or cares who you are... you're right back at the bottom.

Now granted, I haven't given this much thought at all and have no idea if FDev already considered this and decided it wouldn't work, or if its been discussed before and I suspect it probably has, but if it could be made to work it could make for a lot of fun with offers coming in from rival factions offering more credits to steal you away. There could be bigger consequences for screwing up to balance things out perhaps. Defecting could mean a substantial drop in rep if going to a rival faction. I don't know, but seems it could make for a much more interesting dynamic of gameplay.

Thoughts?

Hmm in 2.0 and before that, you got the same reputation level that ylu have at a superpower with all minor factions that are part of this superpower.
So for example, you got allied with the empire, so you got also allied with all imperial minor factions.

However
In 2.2 it works a bit different as far as i know. If you get allied with the empire, you stay neutral with all other imperial minor factions but you can rank up in reputation MUCH faster than at others.
I have experienced this as i have tryed to get allied with an independent faction. It was a lot harder than getting allied with imperial minorfactions due to my superpower reputation.

I hope that this can help you a little bit.

Interesting. I haven't really delved into the powerplay/superpower side of the game as yet. Seems there is potential there to have the sort of thing i'm talking about, just needs bringing to the fore a bit more by the sound of it.

The way I picture it is like with racing games and choosing teams, signing contracts perhaps and working for that team... but you always get offers to join better teams with better cars etc. In ED it could be a blast with the depth the game has. Like pulling up to a station "You're not welcome here Commander" because you broke your contract with them when you had a better offer. But in time the current faction starts taking the **** and asking too much from you and dropping your pay or something (like real life, lol) but in comes another great offer from their rivals. I'd love all that.

I suppose i'm thinking of this more with the smaller independent factions because figuring in being allied to the superpowers makes things a little more complicated and doesn't lend too well to this idea when I think about it. At least, not how the game currently stands. Being allied and of high rank with the Imperials or the Federation etc should mean that you get respect and top jobs all across those powers... makes sense. But it would also be interesting if in some way this idea would work with the smaller factions. Perhaps have it only work for those not ranking with a superpower. So sort of as it is now... you can be allied, but have no solid commitment to them but be free to accept contracts from the minor factions that tie you into regular work with only them.. which you can break with consequences. If you are ranked with a power, you can only do jobs for that power and nobody else. Of course the jobs would have to be just as varied and exciting, with the option to defect and have fun on a larger scale.

Again, just ideas and probably ill thought out ideas, lol. But the roles I feel need to be more defined and if you're ranked or even allied to the Feds you shouldn't really be able to get away with doing missions for the Imperials... unless perhaps undercover, but that's another dynamic that would need some thought.
