I was thinking while jumping between systems... wouldn't it be more realistic and more fun to build up rep with a faction/factions and then have other factions climb over each other to employ your services based on your reputation for getting the job done? Lure you away to go work for them? I mean, in the real world if you're good at a job, have a good CV etc, you're pretty much sought after with companies willing to snap you up based on your work experience or reputation. Whereas in ED, doesn't matter how good you become with a faction, or several, other's aren't interested until you build rep with them, which seems a little unrealistic. You could be the best bounty hunter, hauler, smuggler etc but show up at a new station and it's like nobody knows or cares who you are... you're right back at the bottom.
Now granted, I haven't given this much thought at all and have no idea if FDev already considered this and decided it wouldn't work, or if its been discussed before and I suspect it probably has, but if it could be made to work it could make for a lot of fun with offers coming in from rival factions offering more credits to steal you away. There could be bigger consequences for screwing up to balance things out perhaps. Defecting could mean a substantial drop in rep if going to a rival faction. I don't know, but seems it could make for a much more interesting dynamic of gameplay.
Thoughts?
