I'll rephrase: Checked the second slot (max 128), not the first one (max 256).. That was my mistake.

Whatever else you do... but if you run without shields, don't show up here complaining about the lost cargo if someone smoked your ship. ;-)

You should be able to squeeze 530 cargo space out of Type-9

If you want some survivability A decent shield, shield cell and chaff launcher is a good idea. They are very easily interdicted and slow so you are going to take some hits before you can jump away. This will put you below 500T but not far below and bare in mind even relatively minor hull damage at all can cost you a good hours trading.
