I have just noticed something missing from the original Elite - something which there is a good solid role for in ED. I am talking about Gemstones. The new commodity market has allowed great expansion and the rares bit extends this further and gemstones could utilize this to the max. Think about it - diamonds, sapphires onyx etc would be universal as they are mineral in origin whereas things like pearls and ivory would be system specific rares as they are biological in origin. Come on chaps give us the gemstone market back.

Maybe the recent addition of "Painite" is a start ? It is described as a Gemstone after all (~30000 Cr/ton).
I'm sure Mining could use alot more very high-value items. But for that to happen, there would have to be items worth far more than a mere 30k/ton.
Stuff like that could really ignite a "gold rush" mining run.
But scraping some 30k/ton commodity out of some 3-6% Asteroids... well... nah, not gonna waste my time.
Add at least one zero behind that price - and I might reconsider.

There was definitely gemstones in the original because although they took the same canister space they were sold in grams not tons. You are right they would liven up mining - be harder to detect by scanning because no electro magnetic mark.
