Something named in honor of Iain M Banks?

Hi everyone,

A little more than a year ago Iain M Banks, the acclaimed (and personally one of my favorites along with Alastair Reynolds) scottish sci-fi author known primarily for the "Culture" series passed away from terminal cancer. I know that Frontier has named Beagle 2 landing after the late Colin Pillinger and thought that it would be nice if Iain Banks got something named in his honour too.

I tried to check if there was a proper channel for submitting this type of thing but found nothing, so I decided to ask you guys what you think (also to make sure this isn't something only I would endorse)?

This has been suggested before, I think, but it usually becomes a list of candidates - only FD can decide such things.

i am sure a few people have already used their backing powers to create Banks tributes - there are so many references to sci-fi people in beta 2.06 already ^^ in short, i totally agree banks is one of my fav authors across all genres

If his work is not already in there somewhere I would totally endorse naming some stations/npcs's after culture characters

Such a rich world to choose from, it would be great to his work honoured.

The most fitting tribute to Mr Banks would be (when ship names are implemented) to make sure there is enough space for us to use Culture-style names.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I agree regarding the ship names. Hopefully the interface will be able to cope with the longer ones! I also intend, of course, to use my backer powers to possibly honour him.
I was thinking, in general, of something not immersion breaking. A station, planet, or any other astronomical body (maybe a water moon, for those who have read the Algebraist) named Banks or a variation of the author's name. It's a common enough name that it wouldn't be jarring and too different from the other names that abound on the game, but people that know his work would possibly get the reference and perhaps people that don't know him would be inclined to do a quick search and find out.

Oh my god somebody else who likes Alastair Reynolds? i thought id never find one!

His books are awesome! I love that he manages to write fairly hard science-fiction without abandoning the scope and sense of discovery and mistery that are present, for example, in Bank's work (which is a lot looser on basing itself on current scientific knowledge).

I agree, Banks has been the best science fiction author in Britain (and in my view the world) for decades.
It would be good to have stations and ships named after his creations.
A good candidate for a station would be Chiark Orbital, from The Player Of Games.

I still like the idea of an Orbis station becoming named "Banks Orbital". Everyone who has read the Culture books knows what I mean. :)

My commder name is taken from a character from the hydrogen sonata :)

Yes. Ian Banks tributes would be nice.

Maybe we can run across the Culture on the far side of the Milky Way

If we do, maybe I buy my self a thug class, that should stop pirates in their tracks

You could name it Kiss My Gravitas ;)

I am lucky enough that my bookshelf contains a (very much used and enjoyed) signed copy of 'The Player Of Games'. One of my fave books.

Could not support this more.

I have little doubt that FD are already seeding the ED universe with easter eggs and things honoring many sci-fi personalities.

Vavatch?

How about something like this....
