The radio sound it makes in the galactic map is the same as Polaris... coincidence? i think not
Something odd about 109 Virginis

Wasn't Polaris the system where the mission in Frontier First Encounters ended with the meeting with ....... the Thargoids?
Ive never played that Elite but maybe... your on to something

I thought it was where the thargoids were first encountered.
I tried the map thing, the sound is the same as many other systems in the game. I dont know if its random or based on star type but I couldnt tell any real difference between 109 Virginis and all the stars nearby including Polaris. I tried listening to different types of star systems and couldnt find any pattern really.
Before I went there, it was called 209 Virginis.

I was listening to this earlier and wondering about star types, inhabited, etc. as well. The only thing I noticed right away was that it seems to be just a set selection of sound clips played when you select/mouse over a system with the galaxy map zoomed all the way in. If you have nothing selected and only mouse-over, you can listen to a second or two of the sound, move the mouse, then highlight the same system and hear a different clip. Repeat this a few times and you'll hear all the possible clips. Doesn't seem to be any difference between systems.
Best thing is this thread and all these threads where people are listening to things. I bet FD are weeing themselves laughing and not just at this fantastic picture/comment.
