Something strange happened while mining

My ship has about 15.80 power capacity and 15.86 usage when deployed.

I have 2 mining lasers, a prospector limpet and a collector limpet. When I deploy them, as expected I run into power problems. But I disable Frame Shift Drive and Frame Shift Interdictor and every module works again.

Then I spent about 3 hours and collected about 25 Osmium, 10 gold, and some little ones.

For some unknown reason, suddenly my power plant stopped working. Thrusters couldn't be used, FSD couldn't be used, life support fails. And I don't even know what happened. I've been mining for 3 hours and suddenly power plant breaks? What did I do to break my power plant?

So I lost all the cargo, the ship, and about 600k-800k unclaimed bounty.. ouch!

Before I fly again, can anyone point out how did the power plant fail suddenly?

I suspect a bug that is turning your FSD on, causing your power demands to exceed your power output. I'd also venture a guess that all of your modules are at the same priority.

The reason is that I've been getting messages during combat that my FSD is available even though it was never turned off.

I'd recommend setting your most important modules (shield, thrusters, distributor, fsd, life support, sensors, and chaff) to 1, and everything else > 1.

Well I did get that Frame Shift Drive online message twice during the 3 hour mining. I don't know what that was about.

I have the priorities at default, I think only the important ones were 1, the rest were >1.

I hear suggestions to reboot the ship. I tried to fiddle around but I saw no option to reboot the power plant..

I usually set FSD and other supercruise related stuff to 5
cargo hatch, AFMU, and other non-combat stuff that does not involve hard points is 4
Thursters and weapons are 1
Shields, life support, and shield boosters are 2
SCB, Chaff, and other consumables are 3

This way even if my power plant is reduced to 0% and is producing only 50% power, I can still retract my hardpoints and leave the area.

As forlorn said there seems to be an issue with power management particularly with the FSD as I've noticed the occasional FSD offline/online popup when in combat.

Also what ended up destroying you? did you just hit self destruct or drift into a rock or something?

anyway here's my priority setup since I started monkeying around with pushing my ship's power limits.

Priority 1: Thrusters, shields, distributor, fsd and my chaff module on my ship that rings in at 49% and even if someone pops my power plant it still leaves me with 50% of normal capacity to play with so I can (in theory) spool up my fsd and flee.

Priority 2: Weapons sensors and kws
Priority 3: life support and my shield boosters
Priority 4: are my docking computer fuel scoop and cargo hatch since I really don't need those while trying to fight.

I can probably get away with combining 2 and 3 but I don't see the need right now.

I died from suffocation, because I couldn't then the power plant back on. I had 5 min, the first min was going "what the heck just happened", the next 3 min was googling what to do with power problems, the final minute I learned how to change priorities and turn modules off and then crying at my lost cargo and the insurance I have to pay.

I'm now at 1226 credits after buying back the ship (1.8mil). I can't even afford cargo. After some time thinking about this, I think I can go on by selling some A-grade components and going F-grade until I can afford cargo & insurance to fly then slowly earn money back to fully restore the ship.

I won't dare to fly without enough credits to afford a buyback, lol. Yeah I'm a big chicken with no ballz..

You might be right! I did downgrade the fuel tank for power reasons, and I did hear "main fuel tank depleted" about 30 min prior to the shutdown!

I feel for you but the fuel tank does not require power. I also have to use power management and I have everything that I need in combat at 1 and my FSD on 2 and then all the other stuff on 3.

Fuel tank does not weigh anything and does not cost you any power. You are better off with the biggest fuel tank you can fit on your ship. You may not always want to carry a full tank of fuel (I once had a 1 jump trade run that I could only do with half a tank. More than that required 2 jumps), but do keep an eye on your fuel gauge

Oh man :D google 'Fuel Rats' so that the next time you happen to find yourself in such situation, you'll know there's a way out : )
