Something that I find kind of ugly

I'm 6k Ly out, not wanting to go too far with the impending announcement thingy and just taking a break from combat. I'm plotting no more than 5 jumps at a time to systems I know from experience have a high chance of having elw's, and terraformables. I reach that level where you start to have white dwarf stars and neutrons only to find out that almost all have been scanned BUT nothing else in the system was touched, even if it's in the distance to be scanned without moving from the initial jump-in. Now if the rest of the objects were to be just rocks I'd understand, hell I don't scan them myself. Am I wrong here or is that pretty ugly?

Ahh I know why that is, some people are trying to get to elite in exploring as fast as possible, there is a theory that you just scan dwarfs and neutrons and everything else is a waste of time. I personally like to name as many as possible but I will skip rocks or ice unless I really feel like scanning them.

Not sure I would use the word ugly but I don't understand it myself, surely if your goal was to hit elite (exp) in the shortest time you would be better off staying closer to the bubble as heading out to the neutron fields or other known high value areas takes time which I am not sure is compensated for in the higher expected return.

Personally I will scan if it looks odd, if its pretty close anyway or if I just feel like it. I do however leave a lot unscanned when I am trying to get somewhere, not because it has high value but because its there and that's where I decided to go :D

I fit that description. I need a final push to get Elite in exploring and am on my 3rd great journey. Neutron star farming is the fastest way, if not the most interesting. Yes, it takes time to get there, but you can also scan along the way so it is no worse than hanging closer to the bubble. So it all comes back to value over time, and I'd only scan higher value items. Once you reach the dense neutron star fields, there's a practically unlimited number of them, and you'd have to be unlucky not get 1st discoverer on most of them.

You can't always assume that Commanders are being lazy, although I would think it's mostly the case. My advanced discovery scanner was at 0% on one trip and I had to travel back to the bubble from Sag A for the last 10,000 LY or so just scanning the main star

'... My advanced discovery scanner was at 0% on one trip ...'

How does that happen? Does it just 'wear out' on a long journey? Had you also used up your AFMU?
I have only travelled a few kLY to date.

I scan everything most of the time, even belt fragments........., I am ocd in getting all the unexplored stuff off the nav page because I just go the the next closest "unexplored" and the belt frags clutter it up otherwise. it would be nice if they at least gave up 50- 100 credits for detailed surface scanning them. or reveal all the members of a belt if you scan one.... :D

It was down to human error.
I think it involved a Neutron star. My ship was not in a good way, power distributor, cargo hatch, AFMU, Advanced Discovery scanner all at 0%, plus lots of canopy damage.
Hull integrity was at around 20% too I seem to remember.

Ugly?
Is it wrong to leave some objects for others to scan when you move on?
I'd say that scanning everything is selfish.

Yep, if I find a medium sized nebula with only a few systems in it, I tend to just scan a planet i like the look of, leave a few unscanned for others that want to show they have got that far out.

Also, Im currently looking for something very particular and rare, so I'm jumping and honking and moving on if what Im looking for aint there, which is most of the time. But you know what, I still have upgrades and repires etc to pay for, so if I see a waterworld or earth like etc thats nearish to me, dam right I go grab it before moving on with my search. Im an explorer, not an ocd cataloger.

I'm 6k Ly out, not wanting to go too far snip

If you do want to go too far and not stay away for years you can't stop in every system and scan everything that's on scan range. You have to implement a good rithm of jump - align - horn - quick look at sysmap - jump.
You stop when there's something really interesting or when you are in the mood, otherwise it really takes ages to do significant travels.
Also after few thousands systems a lot of objects lose their novelty and you try to give yourself bigger span goals, so maybe you just rush to a place and when you get there you scan every rock in dozen of systems.
And here is talking someone that doesn't care about credits and neither rank. If you want to go far you have to push, only scanning the main star to leave a trail. Or maybe even not.

When I find a system with the star already scanned, I scan the closest planet. Or when that's scanned as well, the next one down.
I've found systems with up to three Commander names in them that way. I think it would be nice if every passer-by leaves a greeting this way.
