People who say "video games are a waste of time."

It's infuriating. Those same people watch movies or TV everyday. Or read books, everyday. With respect, there is no difference between watching a film, reading a book, or playing a game. The two former see you take in a story. The latter usually means the same.

I don't see the difference between a book or a game.

That would very much depend on the book, film and or the game. There are a lot of books I would read again and films I would watch again but not that many games I would play again, for the story anyways- Half Life, Bioshock ME 1 2 3 just finished four, to name a few.

But playing games to me is not a waste of time as its my time and I shall do with it what I may :D

Have you considered that all may be a waste of time? Next-up: why do you feel it is important not to waste time? Did you borrow it from someone? :)

But its my time to waste...and I got lots of free time because Im medically retired.

Theres way worse things a guy could be doing like getting tanked up in the pub then going out and picking a fight with the bouncers...or the peelers.

Why ye worry what other people say anyway? I smoke loads of weed but Im not even remotely paranoid what anyone thinks of me...take a dig around their life to see how perfect it is ^

It depends on what the stuff you do actually teach you in the end.

TV may be propaganda, ignorance, knowledge or just pleasure. Same with radio, games or books.

The important thing is to avoid propaganda and ignorance and focus on knowledge and pleasure.

That which either teach you something useful or recharge your batteries, will make you a better human being.

The difference between a book and a game is that the game may simultaneously teach your eyes and body motor skills and better reaction time.

Sensory input and process of the input data. Producing output data that is sent to muscles and memory for further process or oblivion.
We want all senses when immersed. We want as many abilities in play as possible so that our body, soul and mind gets the full experience.

A good experience is that of everything (hearing, taste, sight, touch, smell ... artificially enabled perceptions ) combined into something wonderful and engaging.

A good game is radio, tv, physical activity, social interaction, love and learning. All rolled into one.

Look up the Latin for book and get back to me, on that.

As said before; it would depend on the games and the books.

Tic tack tow, a waste of time. Chess is an insight to many things.

Jeffrey Archer, a waste of time. George Orwell, again, more insights.

I don't see anything what can increase your skill, or knowledge and keep you entertained at the same time as a waste of time. Actually? It's the very opposite is true. It's a time well spent. ;) Movies? Well... I have more trouble with them they are unable to absorb me as much than a game or book. books moving your fantasy and games keeping you active. But most of the movies?

I like Mass effect, but instead of Bioshock I have The fallout games as all time favorite alongside with the CIV's Not mentioning Elite series Umm... Did i just mentioned it? :D

And how you spend your spare time? :) I think about this just like you it's mine as far i have nothing obligatory to do, and if you do something worthwhile with it?

Just wow!:O Wery well said! [up]

Intellectually, between a great book/a great movie and a video game, there is no comparison. It's as if you compare Mozart with Rihanna. However there are informative games like ED that allow to learn about the galaxy. Concerning the waste of time, everyone leads his life as he wants

However a great musician or a great book (and maybe a great movie) will go through the centuries. A video game more with difficulty
:D

The thing is, the whole genre of video gaming is just way too new to tell this, but i disagree with you i think some games will be with us, with a very long time, although considering how new the whole sector, and how fast computers and games changing and evolving even right now? I think there will be a lot of changes and surprises before the whole thing settles in, and the final forms became visible.

We will not be here to talk about it

:)

It's your free time OP, do what the hell you want with it.

I currently spend half of my free time playing Elite whilst drinking wine and listening to classic rock (right now Lou Reed Transformer :)). The other half of my free time is spent reading fiction, biography/autobiography, science, history or whatever whilst drinking wine and listening to classic rock.

Some intellectual snobs would say the latter is "more worthy" than the former. Balls to them, it's my life and as long as I am not harming anyone I shall do as I damn well please!
