Talked to a friend of mine, runs the IT for a massive law firm in town. There seems to be no reliable way of getting out of paying the ransom to Microsoft for Outlook. I have to interface with my client's Exchange servers. GRRRRRR!

you can try https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/exquilla-exchange-web-services/ with thunderbird. it's commercial and not very good, but it works. i've been using it for over a year (until i happily quit my job)
