Newcomer / Intro Sooo... what kind of game should I expect after a few years?

Hello fellow commanders.

I doubt there is still someone who remembers me here, since I left for the core when it was still only Elite:Dangerous, there were the old forums and Captain's Log was at it's first version :)
I managed to repair my ship, I am somewhere inside the Norma Arm and I'm more or less directed home - well, I don't even know where is, "home" right now.
I expect to be back in the bubble in a few weeks because I'm in no hurry, but what kind of situation I should expect?

I've read about some incredible modifications to the ships, when I left i was owning one of the best suited ships for exploring, the Asp with almost maxed out range, now probably this range can be achieved on a sidewinder with enough engineering on :) .

I caught a glimpse of Galnet talking about Thargoids, Guardians, a lots of stuff. I would be glad to be given some pointers in order to prepare myself and not appear as the very estranged cousing coming back to civilization after a few years :)

Please, tell me. I'm curious.

Welcome back to the Elite Galaxy commander!

To get an overview of the changes and additions to the game the Wiki may be a good jump off point. It contains information on practically all features of the game and is searchable.
Elite Dangerous - The Elite Dangerous Wiki (fandom.com)

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Regarding that Sidey, just for kicks: https://s.orbis.zone/ayaF 😁 . What's the range (and speed) of your AspX?

You might consider checking in with the DSSA. A bunch of (player owned) fleet carriers scattered throughout the Galaxy, to provide safe havens (repair, refuel, cartography) to explorers. A home from home, so to say.

Then, pretty close to you, there's our new (less than a year old IIRC) station near Sgr A*, Explorer's Anchorage in Stuemeae FG-Y d7561.

And if you've been away really long - Jaques, a cybernetic barkeeper, tried to jump his starport/body to Beagle Point, but failed. He was then discovered a some kly left of Sgr A*, where he became the nucleus of a second, smaller bubble - the Colonia region. Between Colonia and the Bubble, there's now a reasonable chain of inhabited systems, the Colonia Connection Highway.

In the Bubble, the Thargoid war has been going off and on. One of the researchers (also a thruster engineer) has been ousted from his base. Besides the Pleiades, various groups have tried to set up shop in two further nebulae, Witchhead and, just recently, Coalsack. The bets are on how the Thargoids will react to that most recent provocation. Otherwise, Imperials and Fednecks are still (or again) at their respective throats, and Aisling Duval has become a bit older.

Oh, and just the last weeks, FD has started (again) to rebalance incomes. Reactions spread from "wahooo" to "doom".

Wow that's a lot to process :)

I know most of the links and sites you mentioned, coriolis have been always my fav ship builder, along with Inara, but I didn't know about DSSA or Colonia (last one I discovered a few days ago reading on some site).

I'll have a look a those informations.

Besides, my AspX does 37.14 maxed: https://s.orbis.zone/aycz , but please keep in mind this was achieved when Elite: Dangerous was out, not Horizons, not planetary landings, none of all this. I used to scan systems by going with the nose of my ship close enough to do the detailed scan :)

Thanks a lot for all the info

First point: having ": D" come out as a smiley was a mistake in the forum pertaining to a game called "Elite: Dangerous".

Second point: who the hell knows. Development is utterly chaotic around here.

Well well.. it seems only so right to say that I managed to come back. Thanks to the DSSA Sesame I had the chance to repair my ship, which was in not a so good state (figures, 5 years without repairing all the scratches...), make a good amount of money and start the long, but not extremely long trip to Felicity Farseer (because, you know, the only thing I really desire is to go back in the void as soon as my ship is empowered enough).
Got there in a few days, managing to gather enough exploration data to unlock directly grade 5 modifications and make a decent amount of money, equipped my asp for planetary driving and went to gather materials for the FSD upgrades.
I'm grade 2, first roll of grade 3 done but unsuccesfully so I need to gahter a bit of more materials.

God, I didn't remember how exhilarating was this game.
So glad to be back.
(I'll post the same as journal entry on Inara for storyline purposes).

Thanks all for the tips, they were all helpful!

You are never unsuccessful at engineering rolls: you just need to keep doing them until the circles close.

For you mats, geo planetary sites, Dav's Hope, HGE's and/or Jamesons Crash Site will get you a good amount and a material trader will help trade for those you need.,

And we;come back! @@@07

Thanks Cmdr, I used the wrong words, I succedeed but not completely (I read after posting exactly how engineering works). Now I've achieved FSD grade 5 on my AspX.

It is almost time to re-strip down the ship to the basic explorer (I added some good shielding and weps to protect cargo found with the SVR).

What do you think of this build?

I know it's far from perfect, because I've only unlocked FSD max range, I don't have experimental effects on, and so. But I think it's a good starting point.

Side question: it's such a stupid idea to build a Python equipped with SVR and mining equipment in order to gather materials to be used after to improve my AspX?

With the FSD, if you have the materials, apply the "deep charge" experimental effect - I know you haven't but it's definitely worth it - or "mass manager". Either will increase your jump range. Also, and again if you have the materials and engineer access, apply stripped down effects to your PP, PD, thrusters, sensors etc. to futher boost your range. I, personally, have never needed a heat sink launcher but YMMV.

A Python makes an excellent miner as well as a hauler. I wouldn't worry too much about materials as you'll soon amass many of them. You can use the AspX to explore and it's also great at gathering materials as it get's around alot :D

I would, if you can, get to Davs Hope at some point. You'll get heaps of manufactured materials there although you'll not find any grade five ones.

EDIT - up your scoop rating too. You can get a B rated one for a lot less than an A one and sccops don't weight anything.

EDIT 2 - here's my AspX but bear in mind I have all the engineers open to me:

The point defence systems are only fitted because I've used the ship at Guardian structures - they aren't necessary for general exploration.

You may also think about the Phantom as an explorer. It just edges the AspX to my mind but opinions vary.

Good luck|!

I came to a compromise.
I'll save money for the python for later, when I'll decide to start mining for profit (even though it's not so profitabile anymore, it's still very good).

That's the compromise build: not explorer range but reasonably long jump for collecting materials, able to do a bit of punching if needed when the cargo is full.
It should do the trick in order to gather all I need for empowering the ship.

Thanks for the tip on Dav's Hope, I'll get there very soon since I'm close right now

The numbers say that Mass Manager is better for size 5 and upwards. I don't use deep charge even on smaller FSDs as the extra fuel usage annoys me so it is MM on all for me.

To be honest, that build is going to have some problems...

I would ditch the beam lasers completely; the mining lasers are too small (you'll be lasering for ages :D); you have no prospector limpet controller.

HOWEVER! You should do what you want to do! As long as you enjoy what you are doing, then do it. A wise man once said "When you must walk, then walk".

That's right, I forgot the prospectors. Ok, let's rethink.I'd like to have some punching under the belly, maybe I'll ditch the beam for some less-hungry pulse... Or I just put mining lasers on medium pylons and practice my evasions :D

Honestly, I really wouldn't bother putting guns on anything that isn't solely designed to fight. A miner or trader that just happens to have some guns on is going to be mediocre at battle at the best, and any half decent combat ship will run rings around it. You're better off focusing on speed, evasion, and breaking target locks to escape, not trying to stand and fight. You won't win. If you wouldn't feel comfortable taking it into a hazres and finishing up a fight against an equally armed ship, don't bother.

EDIT; For instance, if you want to turn an Asp into a mining ship, this is what it should ultimately look like, before engineering of course. Focused, refined, able to do one job and do it as good as it possibly can. Every kind of mining, larger cargo capacity, bigger shields, faster, able to boost more frequently, etc.
