Sorry Guys, i just can't get on with it!

First off before i start this thread, i would like to take the opportunity to thank all the cmdrs who offered advice, help, guidance in setting up my Rift VR. I have learnt a lot thanks to you.

So, I just can't get on with the VR, i have given it every chance and have given it a lot of usage, BUT everytime i go back to my 2d setup i prefer that. No more excuse's only to say it is not for me and i suppose Horse for Courses. As i don't play any other games that is VR compatible, and really i only bought it for ED.

The experience of being in the game is a jaw dropping experience, but................i prefer the setup with my 2d and having the use of a separate screen for checking 3rd party tools, email and other things i do whilst playing ED.

SO, if anyone wants a 2 week old Oculus rift with a 2 year John Lewis extended warranty, or knows of anyone who wants an almost new Rift, then please PM me for a cracking must go deal. I even ordered the VR Cover Standard set for it which is still boxed unopened.

Sorry guys. I know some of you will be understanding this is not for everyone, and i am unfortunately one of those people.

Sorry to hear that. I use my second screen for a lot of my trade resources, etc, so my new transition to VR has had me struggling with this to a degree. Still, I enjoy the VR so much during combat that I probably won't go back to pure 2D. Hope you find a buyer!

Thank you, finding a buyer is not critical as i know it will go, but wanted to give this forum the chance to buy it first, but i wanted to thank the people who took a lot of their time explaining things to me. Combat, funnily enough is one of the things i can't get on with, i lost quite a few fights i would normally win!

Wow! I beleive this is my first time I've read someone actually go back to 2D after having played ED in VR.
Did'nt think it was possible. I guess everyone REALLY is different.

Sorry to hear that man. The Rift absolutely blew my mind... Anyways I have shared your link, I know that there are some guys who are planning to buy a Rift, maybe they'll find you. o7

Hi, and sorry to see it didn't work out. I purchased mine last week, had I waited this one week I had taken it!

I have had myself a bit of a hard time with the Rift, but just today I think I finally hit the "almost" perfect settings and was finally awed. I think there's an application that allows you to set your browser and other apps and pin it to your 3D view. Seems pretty cool as it looks like you had another monitor in the ship. Might want to give it a try if not having your third party tools is your only problem... I'll post the link if I find it.

[EDIT]: Here it is: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/309080-The-VR-Dashboard-quot-V-quot-is-now-in-Open-Beta!

Really sorry to hear that Wasp0. Personally I happily switch back and forth - playing some sessions in VR and some on the screen as I agree that they both have their advantages (VR for immersion obviously - screen for screenshots, videos, fuel ratting, etc). I love them both and there's no shame in admitting that VR isn't the be all and end all for ED but I'm sad to hear you can't get on with it at all. Are you really sure?

I'd have to be killed to give up mine :) What's needed for VR users is some type of way to bring utilities into the VR view. There's a precedent for this, actually, and it's FlyInside for FSX. There you can import any window into the VR view while in the flight sim FSX (and Prepar3d and XP10/11) - and it's even DX9!

I'd think that "view importable" tools for use in ED/VR would be a boon to traders and others who need this type of stuff. Perhaps even the developers should think on this and take what's already a great VR title - among the best - and make it greater by doing all they can to keep the VR user in the VR world, never needing to come out for tasks such as typing, etc.

You should keep the device. VR is the future. It will grow on you. Some need more time with it.

There's also Virtual desktop that you can use as your desktop, and you just alt-tab to it...

https://youtu.be/kyN2Gj0Q_4g

I've got Virtual Desktop - tell me more about alt-tabbing to it tho. So I run ED from a Frontier purchased, desktop shortcut (which then automatically launches Oculus Home and then switches the HMD to showing ED). How do I then start Virtual Desktop? Or do I run Virtual Desktop first (from Oculus Home) and then (within Virtual Desktop) double click my ED shortcut to start ED? Won't that then stop Virtual Desktop?

Sorry guys, I don't even have a Rift yet, so I wouldn't know. I thought it would work just like a regular desktop :D

P.S.
Wasp0, thanks for announcing this just after I purchased a new Rift :(

wash your mouth out boy!!!!! ;)

seriously, sorry you do not get on with it. ED and racing games like AC will never be the same again for me and i have lost interest in a lot of games which are not in VR due to my rift.

as you say, horses for courses i guess.....

Sorry and hope you do not feel my fanboy vr rants left you out of pocket.

Sorry to hear the VR experience is not working out for you. As Mike stated, I'm also not very motivated to play the numerous 'screen based' games I bought during the winter sales on Steam, just because I have the VR set. I even play 'Duskers' in the VR set.
If you bought it online, you have 14 days to send it back and they'll have to refund your money. Or is that too late already?

I am 'near sighted' and there is a noticeable difference and increased sharpness when I use my glasses with the Rift vs No glasses. I recall you were put off by the enormous resolution loss vs your screen setup.

Going back to screen is not an option for me, but since you haven't gotten used to it as much in such a short period of time, you'll get back to flying on screen without missing the VR too much.

My advice is though, don't sell it too soon, but in 2 or 3 weeks (if the refund period is void anyhow) after you really convinced yourself that it's just gathering dust.

Good luck o7

Any window, screen or application can be sent directly to you in VR, in any game. I even have a webcam pointed at my keyboard, so I can look at the keys to type. (My keyboard view sits where the helm panel is. It's angled, positioned and cropped)

Or because the OP is using a rift, this is a more polished product V:

No not the first I've seen, some simply can't cope with VR sickness.

Still it's a shame, it isn't for everyone of course and like Alec I tend to switch between the two depending on what I'm doing but at least you gave it a good go. Hope you get a decent price for your Rift Wasp0 and you're not too mad with those who over-enthused about VR (sorry).

Oh and thanks as well. You made me realise I had a 5 year old PC so I've order some new components and should be building a new rig over the weekend.

Fly safe <o

I have been playing using VR for about a year now. For almost every game I have played it is brilliant. However, driving the SRV can cause me motion sickness, as can the Oculus game set in the ISS Station. If every game I played caused motion sickness I would abandon VR.

I don't regret the purchase, but I don't use my Rift half as often as I expected to.
It's just not comfortable after a while, argues with my specs which then fog up and it impedes the drinking and smoking which is a large part of my play style.
Weird that you found it hindered combat though, it's transformed my ability in that department. If I'm spoiling for a ruck, that's when I can be bothered to put contacts in.

Set the SRV Camera to "Lock to Horizon" - that will likely have a positive effect..

I'm just relieved it wasn't a complaint over graphics quality.

I haven't done much trading since I got VR. I don't watch videos or browse the forums or use 3rd party tools while playing ED, but I do use a pencil and notepad to jot down commodity prices, and that does not work well in VR at all. I'll need to find a solution before trading again, or switch to 2D while looking for a good trade route. I can play in 2D for a short while, but I don't like it.
