Sorry. Noob Here. I need people to tell me how to pronounce these names please...

I am completely new to Elite and just got the game fro PS4 on the 27th. I enjoy roleplaying in games like this and I enjoy knowing as much as I can regarding the lore and the setting of the world I am in.

That being said I am also a stickler for pronouncing names of people and places correctly. So I am gonna list the names of people and places I am having trouble with and if you all could give me the correct way to pronounce them I would greatly appreciate it.

Aisling Duval - I have been saying Eye-ling

Arissa Lavigny- Duval
- (The lavigny part obviously) I have been saying Luh-vig-knee

Edmund Mahon - I have been saying Muh-hone

Denton Patreus - I have been saying Pa-tray-us (or just refer to him as "Jerkbag")

Li Yong-Rui - I have purposely avoided trying to say his name out loud or just call him "Lee"

Archon Delaine - I have been saying Delay-knee

Pranav Antal - Honestly have no idea here. Pra-nav An-tall?

Achenar - I have been saying Ack-eh-nar

Cubeo - I have been saying Q-bey-oh

Eotienses - Not even gonna try this one

I greatly appreciate any help that is offered. Thank you in advance. :D

I spent the last week in a system I was calling "Morrisons" and then I realised it was actually "Mariosonis" (or something) so I'm probably not the best person to ask.

Thats what I do when I give up trying to pronounce something correctly.

I just pick a word that is somewhere in the ballpark and use it instead, but I prefer to at least try lol

ALD: I pronounce like Ailing (as in having some illness or affliction)
LYR: lee yong roo-ee (that's how I pronounce it anyway)
Cubeo: q-bee-oh
That's my pronunciation anyway.
Welcome to Elite! If that's your main difficulties so far you're probably doing better than I did when I started out!

Oh no I have plenty of issues. I am just getting started with my various question threads over the next few days lol

I need to look to see if there are old threads, but I am having a multitude of issues.

AZELING is one of the more modern/non-gaelic ways to pronounce it and how I and my friends say her name, although there are several others including ASHling:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aisling_(name)

I would guess that by 3302, Azeling or Ayzling would have won out over the more ancient versions.

And Cubeo is pronounced:

Cue-Bee-Oh

By everyone in my PowerPlay group. Its our home system.

My guess would be more like "Ay-ling"
Arissa Lavigny- Duval - (The lavigny part obviously) I have been saying Luh-vig-knee

Sounds good to me.

Edmund Mahon - I have been saying Muh-hone
I'm thinking "Man", kind of like Ed McMahon, or Vince McMahon. I call him "Ed" though.

Denton Patreus - I have been saying Pa-tray-us (or just refer to him as "")

Yep, sounds about right.

Li Yong-Rui - I have purposely avoided trying to say his name out loud or just call him "Lee"

Lee Yong Roo-eee, like Hong Kong Phooey. There is a rumor he may be cousins with the ill-fated flight crew of Sum Ting Wong, Wei Tu Lo, and Bang Ding Ou.

Archon Delaine - I have been saying Delay-knee
"Tar-get". But I read it as "Dah-lane"

Pranav Antal - Honestly have no idea here. Pra-nav An-tall?
Spot on.

Achenar - I have been saying Ack-eh-nar
That's what it sounds like when I say it too.

Cubeo - I have been saying Q-bey-oh
About how it sounds when I say it too.

Eotienses - Not even gonna try this one

"Eh-tee-en-sis"

I greatly appreciate any help that is offered. Thank you in advance. :D

When you're really up for a challenge:

Cuyahoga
Mantua
Tuscarawas

Now those are some fun places to say - or watch others try to say.

Being a Chinese, I can tell you definitively how to pronounce this one... the rest, sorry :D

It's pronounced exactly as you see it. The Chinese name is phonetically translated (or "Romanised"). The "Rui" part is same as how you'd say "ruin" minus the "N".

Aisling Duval - Ashling Duva:l (like Ashley). Yes, seriously.

Seriously though, could we change lingua franca to a language that is not so ridiculously helpless when it comes to any names of anything?

Aisling is a real Irish name, and it's usually pronounced Ashling. Irish names can be like that - think of Siobahn or Niamh.

That's all I've got I'm afraid. There isn't anyone I talk to about this game out loud so I've never really thought about it.

EDIT: Double ninja'd.

Well now I just feel dumb.

How am I supposed to serve the Space Waifu when I have pronounced her name wrong for 2 weeks [blah]

I would suggest that by 3302/03, the more modern non-Gaelic versions may have won out. (AazeLing or Ayzling)

Irish, like Scottish, and the whole of Gaelic language... I do like to hear them spoken, but whoever tried to invent spelling... there had to be a whole lot of whiskey involved.

Aoibhneas
Comhaltas
Comhluadar
Flaithiúlach
Muiceanach idir Dhá Sháile
Sláinte
Taoiseach

Just a handful of words and a place-name that sound absolutely nothing like how they look. It's easier to pronounce:
