Space Architecture?

I'm hoping that as the game develops, we see more large space architecture. Thinking about what what kinds of things would be cool:
- Shipyards
- Astronomical telescopes
- Large scale asteroid mining
- Long-range hyperspace gates
- Space elevators
- Massive space living installations

These don't have to be user-interactable, but they sound like great things to see and fly-near.

What do you think, and what would you add?

one thing we wont be getting is long range hyperspace gates, DB has said 'No short cuts'

to that list i would add:

refuelling stations around gas giants (cheaper fuel)

military installations

salvage yards

ships graveyards

I would love to see more structures in space. Not over the top... (nothing like the overdone cities-in-space that X Rebirth attempted).

If he ever needs anyone to help out with some of the architectural design for the planetary milestone buildings I would be there like a shot - hi-tech architect and architectural illustrator at your service David! :)
 
The cheapest of all feuls was the feul scoop that was in the original game. I hope they have that in the final game, because it goes hand in hand with it.

There has to be something like that otherwise we won't be able to explore unknown systems. I remember the flickering edge of the white sun 30 years ago at the bottom of the screen :)

Have you seen the space station with Eden project-style vegetation domes - I think it was Brooks Estate on Pi-Fang
 
Also don't forget that there might be Asteroid Bases planned. Fingers crossed.

Also when/if they introduce planet landing some of the arcitecture there would have potential to be great. I really want to cruise over the surface of an industrial planet and see plumes of smoke from coming from towers, or even landing on a war torn planet with battle raging all around. I think I've read somewhere about landing on planets with large animals and being able to big game hunt!

Agreed with everything, except:

Aesthetics are nice to look at for 5-10 seconds. Then it's absolutely meaningless. This is the state of every astronomical body now (planets, moons, stars, rocks, etc.).

Make them interactable or don't bother having them at all. It's the interaction that gives them meaning for its lifetime in the game, not a pointless 5-10 seconds of visually admiring.

hmm.. I guess I see where he;s coming from, but it sounds like it's seriously limiting our ability to explore. for all those 400 billions stars, how many could someone get to in 5 years? more to the point, how much distance across the galaxy could you really get across?

yup, all good ideas. I like the fuel-stop ones. something where you might not even dock inside it, but dock outside on booms where all you might be able to get is fuel, some munitions and maybe one or two commodities. might be some contacts thought...?

I can imagine a ship hiding by running silent and drifting in a salvage yard or graveyard...

Also maybe the aftermath of a battle?

clearly not. now I have a hauler and I've saved halfway to a cobra, I'm exploring more and more. can I get to Pi-Fang in a hauler?

sorry, I've quit the game for the night, my install seems to crash about 50% of the time I come out of supercruise, it's getting really annoying.. bug reported over a week ago, but no response yet... *sigh* I have high hopes that 1.04 will make things better!

yeah, that all sounds good, but I figure we'll pretty much have to wait for planetary landings first :)

I think it depends on the thing. a military shipyard could easily be incorporated into gameplay as you have to destroy a new ship or somesuch, btu others might well be more sights to see. an orbiting telescope for example, or some massive high energy physics project could merely be sited in systems to view. I don't mind having interesting sights to see :) of course if they can think of missions or uses then fair enough. maybe one can dock at a high energy science centre for cheap rates on anti-matter?

Might be nice to collect all the suggestions into one list. These kinds of details are what I enjoyed about the X series of games.
