Space Engine on steroids[VID]

Came over this incredible video, just had to share even if it isn't Elite.

Gorgeous procedural magic. I'm really hoping we'll see more of such colorful effects while exploring in Elite in the not to distant future :)

Enable fullscreen and pump up the volume ;)

Truly remarkable. There are some nice effects the FD should really adapt. Maybe one day when we're able to land on planets we can see such colors. The fog, atmospheric effects and the depth of field are awesome too.

I've just watched this video again, I'm downloading it as I type.

Excellent stuff, work of a genious. To be frank, Elite already left me baffled just what is possible in our age, and those who can program these stuff - they are superhumans. Or thargoids themselves.

Yeah, I can't wait for atmospheric planets in Elite, though that said It think Elite's planets are better in terms of terrain. There are some stuff in Star Citizen terrain that looks absolutely amazing but this video is a bit cherry picking, not that they don't look great, mind you, but a lot of it suffers from what I call math mountains, I think Elite has the potential to look a lot better then Space Engine, though acretion disks and such stuff being added would be beautiful. We will see what happens, though that said, it is really tricky to get an actual game engine running with this, Space Engine probably couldn't work as a game engine, but it doesn't need to.

Love Space Engine and have donated a few times, usually after an update. If you like it, please donate.

Anyone know of some good tours to download? My camera work is shoddy and I'd love to put a finished tour and use this as a show-off "screen saver" for my TV.

As much as I like space engine, and its gorgeous visuals, I dont think that, at this time there is the hardware and network capacity, to have games look this good and be equally playable in the practical sense, as with have at this time with games such as ED, unless it becomes just an on rails Quick Time Event, that said I fully expect that as hardware become even more power full and capable of even more complex multiple calculations that, we will be edging closer to seeing visual and game mechanic complexity...

Thus far I like what Frontier are doing in so much as balancing, visuals game mechanics and hardware requirement accessibility, that said every decent game developer I believe does aspire to do the best within those limitations.

Once ED approaches the half life of this project in 3 years of so I have no doubt that, we will all see an increase in both visual fidelity and deeper game mechanics. :)

Space Engine has quite low system requirements and even "only" uses OpenGL 3.3 – so doesn't even squeeze the best possible out of the hardware. So I would say it'd be totally possible to use these visuals in a game without having a too significant impact.

However, it's important to point out that Space Engine is nothing but visuals. There's no AI, no physics simulation, no background simulation, etc. That's what really requires a lot of power.
