Stellar forge (the ED procedural engine) is quite capable. In fact, given the amount of development behind it, it will probably end up looking a lot beter than space engine.

Space engine is nice, but it is only good for seeing exotic things. There isn't really anything to do except take screenshots. Which it is great at...I have a whole serios of desktop backgrounds that I've made from it.

Oh and control of time...space engine lets you speed up time and reverse...so you can watch that sunrise like 50 times.

What space engine has (and ED doesn't) is seamless transition from orbit to planet.

If you want to waste a couple of hours drooling in front of the screen aimlessly then fire up Space Engine. If you want to play and have fun then fire up Elite Dangerous.

That's how I see it.

Back in the day Celestia was the stuff but I think Space Engine has gone way beyond it in terms of complexity and development. Still the Cobra engine is quite capable. With time Elite Dangerous will look insanely good AND it will have things to do other than move about.

Horizons.... What ED has and SE doesn't, is an actual game.
Ehm, with all due respect, are you sure? ED has some pew pew going on, but it's an empty shell almost as much as Space Engine is. I would wait several "expansion seasons" to fill the game with "game" before making such statement. :)

Firstly, there's a new version of Space Engine out - 0.9.7.3. Secondly, Elite may have gameplay, but for planetary detail, lighting, phenomena, number of astronomical objects to gawp at and general graphics loveliness, Space Engine is my go to. :) Sorry Elite... :)
