Space Engineers

I do play this but unfortunately I don't have the time to devote to it. I like survival sandbox game-play with creativity and this game definitely has that.
Also I suspect the multi-player angle might be good but I have never tried that.
It does seem to keep improving so I am kind of hoping that there will come a time when I will be able to give it the attention it deserves and the investment of early access will pay off.
I can imagine that between this (crafting creating) and E:D (trading exploring fighting etc) all my Space gaming needs will be nicely fulfilled...

I bought space engineers some months ago for 3 friends and myself, but we didn't play multiplayer a lot yet, mainly because of the horrible netcode (people die randomly and other things). I've had a few hours of fun in singleplayer tough :)

They're doing regular updates which really add a lot of sensible features to the game. The only bad thing is that if you don't have a good connection to the host, you can easily die while walking around inside moving ships.

Been playing a lot of the new survival mode on a steam friends only game the last week, the latest patch has fixed the multiplayer (previously there was a huge memory leak) and it all seems good now with two of us playing.

Regarding bouncing around in someones ship while they are flying, you can just make another cockpit to sit in. Whoever gets in a cockpit first is the pilot, anyone else sitting in another cockpit will not have control.

Loving the new survival mode! :D

Space Engineers gets its planets this Thursday. 50/50 PG/handmade. The sizes are supposed to be huge, having played around in the dev version (github) for a while, they are very impressive. However since then, there has been a few changes and the completely PG planets have been replaced with partial PG & handmade. They look very impressive in the videos, but until they're in game its hard to say exactly what they'll be like.
.
I play Space Engineers a lot, its a great game with seamless space travel, planetary landings, mining, exploration and survival. Also the devs are really regular with weekly updates. I also have the other title similar ME (medieval engineers).
I'm looking forward to seeing the planets this week and if they are, what I hope they're going to be, then this puts Space Engineers right back at the forefront of voxel space games. Although they were really already there, just needed planets to fill the gap.
.
I wish them luck for this Thursday. I'll be planet hunting the end of this week, building bases, settlements and everything that goes along with a really good solid sandbox space game. Space Engineers has it all here, with the introduction of planets, it finally has that missing piece. Can't recommend it enough, really good game.

Planets have been released. Enjoy!

The planets look pretty good, though not realistic as in Elite. I wonder if the planets are 1:1 scale. It's probably not scientifically accurate.

I like how players can build bases and ships in SE. I hope we'll get base building in Elite in the near future.

It all looks very cool. The update however it's awful on my side, after a lot of bug-fixing and polishing it might be more playable.

I don't get the company behind for some reason hates linux, the netcode is awful and windows only, dedicated server software needs to be put on linux that is where the real server power is, once they do that the whole multiplayer will expand to very cool levels.

Not sure how you know they look more realistic in ED, we've not seen any yet, this close certainly. The ones shown in ED stream were more asteroid like.
.
I've been flying around and they are stunning planets. Grass, tree's, flowers, snow etc. They seem to have the earth like ones pretty nice. The mars type and the alien planets look really good too, I'm yet to fly around those. Although the alien planets look really sci-fi, I love that. Plus of course, the sabroids popping out of the ground... nice..
.
The great thing about SE here is, it goes now to the players for more and more content (planets), so expect to see some really nice player made content appearing very soon. ;) Planets galore I think.

As cool as this is and I now really want to have another look at the game (bought it long ago and did try it a bit but never got around to finding the time to really dig deep into all the mechanics), I am not keen on any base-building or owning in Elite. I'd rather have the development efforts invested into our ships and what we can do with them. For example, deep ship customization, both technical and cosmetic, exterior and interior. I want to make my ship my home. :)

The Stellar Forge of Elite generates planets based on composition, tectonic plates, gravity, materials etc. That makes it more realistic. In SE they randomly generate planets without that. It does look pretty good in SE, the landscapes are kinda unrealistic imo.

I know, I'm looking forward to seeing what FD come up with for planets. Nice thing is, it won't be long till we'll see. ;)

Space Engineers have really good planets now, little more sci-fi, but I like that. Although not as sci-fi as NMS, although I like that one too. Nice to have all these different approaches.

This is free to try for the next 8 hours on Steam if anyone wants to give it a go (which is what I'll be doing if the kids are able t amuse themselves).

Couple of little videos. Planet approach plus a look at the info going onto the in-game screens. Nice mod that.

'KSH' the makers of Space Engineers were just awarded Indie game of the year. Well deserved imho. Well done to them for this great game.

Just started playing this a week ago. I've got 90 hours in....... I'm addicted. If you have the right mods it's already a pretty damn great game. i play on a server with my brother, he made the star system with planets spread really far apart. It takes an hour or so to travel to each. and if we die we don't "cheat" and respawn at a medical station that isn't on the plant or station we were on or around.

i WISH they would add survival elements like in empyrion though. Having to grow food or hunt for it. And have more FPS elements. There are but it's more an afterthought right now. Don't turn it into an action game. But have threats liek wildlife to worry about other than the kinda cheap spiders an dcyberhounds there are right no) I will say that the interface is clunky as hell an dnot intuitive. It's a big learnign curve to get used to it. So much so i kinda gave up on the game early on. I got it about three weeks ago. played a little, got annoyed. But went back to it and i'm glad i did.

Planets can be breathtaking. I've had so many "i can't believe i'm playing a game like this right now" moments. Like this has all the basic elements to potentially be the greatest game of all time. But......it's still a long way there. Just imagine a game like this but with a mission system like elite. For a start.

You haven't truly experienced a space game until you've watched and controlled gigantic welders to build your ship or sent a satellite into space you can remote control from the surface. Or better yet, sent a probe (outfitted with a camera) to survey another planet. If your'e action minded, not so much for you right now though. Althoughon pvp servers it gets pretty crazy.

Anyway,

i designed/made/created this ship yesterday. It's only my second ship so far (well not counting the one i found and severely redesigned). Two seater so me and my brother can ride a small ship together without having to put a temporary ridiculous looking passenger seat on top of our ships everytime.

i'm pretty proud of it. Though it did require about 7 hours of my time. I'm a bit fussy on details and i don't have an engineer's mind, i work on trial and error a lot. A sharp eyed nerd might notice the guns are actually millenium falcon's guns. A mod, obviously. Despite creating it on a planet it's actually only space flyable (no atmospheric thrusters). but i saved the blueprint so that i can assemble it in space.
