I'm going to have a good look at SE again. I bought the game Christmas 2013 and loved it as soon as I started to play. From then to now, there have been huge changes, not least 'Planets', it's been a long rocky (in some cases) road. I wish them luck with the game now. They have said they have plans for the game even further, so that sounds hopeful.

I am really hoping I grab back some of that enthusiasm I had for the game for many years, but that started to seriously drop off a year or so ago.. If some of the problems have been fixed that were making my game unenjoyable, then I'll be really pleased.

Plus 'Ladders' again. How can it go wrong.. ;)

I was watching this game from the start and always wanted to try it.
I guess an "official release" would be a good excuse for it.

Can you play it singleplayer? (I mean, at all? And if, can you actually achieve something?)

SE is free to play on steam for the weekend.

I tried it last night. Having paid lots of Empyrion, I'm not all that impressed over all TBH.

Worryingly, I was getting performance warnings despite having a 4ghz i6700, with an Nvidia 1060... the graphics aren't that great either.

If it's a 'game' as such you want and especially survival, then yes, Empyrion is the one to play. Or indeed NMS.

For a building 'sandbox', then SE is the one to go for. imho.

Very different games.

Edit:
For me SE is for things like this:

Some will get what I mean, some won't, but that's fine. :)

Hi,

reading a little bit about Space Engineers and seeing some videos let me think about to try this out.

Maybe somebody can answer me some questions :)

So its all about building things in space and planets very cool! You can fight in first person (and third) or on ah ship big or small. The planets and Solar Systems Scale depends on your computer but it could reach real life scale ( i am correct?).

- so what could I do in exploration on the planets or in the solar systems?
- not more than 16 players can be in one instance and do whatever they want?
- can I build a city with a faction and grow this qith a space fleet and ground troops for waging war against some other faction in my system or can they jump in in my system?
- is there life on the planets beside trees? :)
- mystical things on planets or in space?

Hope this can be answered :) would like to try another space game I don´t think so that elite will evolve further sadly.

cheers

The size of your game world does really depend on your system. There is a block count, I don't use, but it may be good for mp, I only play sp in SE. The block count limits the number of blocks in a world, I think around 50,000 or so. I don't use that because a large ship can eat blocks, so just turn it off. If your playing mp whereas teams are allowed to build things, then a block count may be a good idea.

There have been 46 or more players playing in one section, so not sure how many can play together onscreen.

In sp and mp the worlds can be as large as your system can manage, I have no idea how this works in mp, but sp the world your in is the only world you have, but it will be vast. I'm at 3mil ingame km's at present and when I say in-game scale you'll understand that is some distance. There are no boxes in SE, your in the world your in, anything you change in that world remains changed. But the more you change the more weight on your system. & yes, you can build anything any size, I have a 2.6km long ship, a basic structure that is 70km long, 15km long station etc. Just whatever you want to build really.

Planets have only spiders and wolves (they are the aliens). There are also drones (no npc's as such, in SE), these drones, spiders, wolves etc, will attack. Pirate ships, floating debris, abandoned ship's, station's etc can be found along the way.
All this can be setup in the game menu, turned on or off and so on, depending on whether or not you want to play with them. Planets have life sounds, but there is nothing other than the spiders or wolves, drones etc. No life as such.
There are hundreds of mod planets to be used, plus systems ready made in the steam workshop, so worth a look. Huge numbers of things are made by the community so the workshop is a very full place.

You can place planets in-game (shift/f10), plus other items, only in creative though. Make a world then try it out in survival to see how it runs. Then go back to creative if you want to add, take away etc, until you have what you want.

Build a city or whatever and have another faction come attack it, if you like that pew, pew type gameplay. Survive, build, experiment etc. All good fun.

I tend to build ships in creative and then transfer them into a survival world and see if I can actually run them. Not as easy as you think, large ships need lots of maintenance especially if you have pirates turned on, expect to be attacked.

The only mystical things in SE space are us really, plus the things you'll come across whilst travelling along. Its vast, much larger in scale to ED, not size as such, but you'll get what I mean if you play. They did state at one point it was practically infinite, but when tested that wasn't the case, it started to break down when you reached vast distances, vast in game scale, which is big, as we have 8x8ft blocks and a engineer that is 2mtrs tall or so. That scale is throughout the game, therefore relevant. They have worked on the game a lot and it seems stable now at vast distances. There is no smoke and mirrors other games use, just one large space. Hard to explain SE scale, but you'll understand after a while of playing.
Anything can be mined or built on, I have a 'hole' video :O, I can't remember how far I dug down with a mining rig I built, simple 20mins rig, but it was a hell of a way down on a planet, felt like a long way too. Underground bases etc, all possible.

But SE is nothing like ED, it's very much a sandbox game ie. build it yourself.

Skyboxes are many in the workshop, so look at those. I tend to play with no skybox at all, complete black and the asteroids turned up high, so the space around you that will look fairly filled is all somewhere to go, if you want.

Go through the setup menu in detail, it will help get you the world you want. But you can always change things, the world will remain the same if you decide to change skybox, planets etc, although taking a mod planet back off your world list, will remove it from your game.

The more you build the more the pressure on your system, but they have done really good things with performance and it is very good at present.

All ships will need fuel pipelines, airtightness is great, so use that. Again you'll get into it, takes a long time, but it's great fun.

Edit; The hole.... Mad really. :/ Be warned these are quite boring to watch ;)

First 15 secs worth watching.. ;)

Go to 11.00mins to see the final moments and outcome.

Oh yes, forgot, multicrew, first and third person, it's all there.

2.64km long ship..
Think.. Train.. ;)

I would add one more thing. SE is a sandbox game and as such needs huge numbers of hours to play and enjoy. Put the time in and you'll get full rewards. Just like any true sandbox game, there is much work to be done to really enjoy the experience. But once your involved.. its really great..

Many Thanks for your time and the great Infos! :)

I like Sandbox games and this huge ability to make things on my own. I would insert time in it over a long period if I can save all my progress and try things out. It looks very interesting to me because you could make everything in the game. You could also built assets for a Mission like Experience for antoher player.

I have to watch more vids, I like Space alot but my time also and since ED I watch carefully in which game I put my time into.

It´s all about fun in space and on planets and it seems to me that SE get it on point ;)

cheers

No problem.

Further to SE, I would love to see planets like NMS in the game, that would be perfect for me, proper sci-fi feel. But there are some nice mod planets for SE, so we don't miss out too much.

My videos are pretty poor, but I like to store them and YT is a great place to do that. There are many good channels that anyone interested in SE, should check out (not mine, unless you like solitary type vids, on the whole).
SE in sp, has a very lonely vastness, that does feel really good if your into space and not hopping around station to station, jumping all the time or in quick travel. Space is about lonely travel and the feeling of knowing your never going to see more than a grain of it in your lifetime. SE gives that feel.
Asteroids are really interesting to mine and just visit, getting out the ship is good and going to explore places.

SE offers some really nice relaxing gameplay, like this vid here. The planet was hostile in it's conditions, but the approach and brief planetside visit gives a fair impression of SE and the loneliness.. Which is a good thing, very good, for space anyway. ;)

NMS planets in SE would be nice: Or perhaps... ship building in NMS, yep, that would do the trick.. [yesnod]

Merge SE, NMS & ED, if we get nothing else from it, we'll still have lots of initials.. :D
