Space Facility mission popped up, ended up wanted, curious.

Not a rant as such, just curious what I should have (or what the game design assumed I should have) done differently.

So I decided to visit one of those station-but-not-quite-station thingies that FDEV have been keen for us to look at.

Whilst checking modules, a mission pops up at the station-but-not-quite-station is being attacked by raiders. OH NOES!

So this message looks a little different, I select the <INSERT GENERIC PSEURANDOM PURPLE LEAGUE OF SOMETHING> option.

Half the radar goes green, half the radar goes red. Woohoo! I guess I'm in a Combat Zone now.

Start shooting at Red, end up a murderer...

What step did I miss here? (seriously, I've been away from the game for a while and I'm curious what I missed)

Sounds like you sided with the attacking side. (Whenever I've done that the defence forces were often marked as 'system defence force' etc, and the attacking force have either been pirates or the opposing side that's in a war state). I'm not sure if it's always that way, but I think as a rule of thumb attacking an installation or its defenders is a black mark in that system if it has a security rating etc. (I'm guessing an Anarchy system would be fair game).

EDIT: There's a neat status tab in the right cockpit panel now which can give you a steer on minor faction standings etc. (Although some of the war states I've encountered have been kinda broken. IE the tab suggests you can attack / defend certain installations to help in the war effort, but then completely different factions are there defending / attacking ;))

This is where you went wrong. It's a scenario, where one of the stations comes under attack by pirates, not a combat zone. Sounds like you sided with the pirates based on the name you aligned with... this won't change the legality of any targets... attacking the station and it's defenders will still make you wanted.
