With there being no sign of us getting out of the pilot’s seat in Beyond, I thought it would be fun to imagine some weird game mechanics once we are able to move around. Since there is no chance of any of this being relevant, have some fun.
I’m taking inspiration from 80’s and 90’s games to keep in style with our very 80’s ships.
On tourist stations we should get mini games inspired by the Leisure Suit Larry franchise. Mini games are like rhythm games and drinking games (virtual beer pong) with the goal of making someone like you enough to sleep with you. Completing the mini game leaves you relaxed and satisfied giving a small bonus to manoeuvrability due to your better outlook on life. The bonus lasts until you log out.
On poor stations, mini games are inspired by the Space Quest series. Remember Roger Wilco, the space station janitor? Quests are silly puzzles and other ridiculous activities needed to save the station from disaster that only the janitorial staff can complete. Completing a mini quest gives you a speed boost owing to your desire to get the heck out, until you log out.
Mini games on stations in outbreak are inspired by Doom. Surviving to get back to your ship gives a small bonus to weapon damage owing to your paranoia and heightened state of fear.
Mini games on anarchy stations inspired by the BBS game Infinity Complex. Basically you go around finding junk to make bombs, grenades, guns and ammo. You blow stuff up and shoot people for no particular reason. This is a PvP paradise and PvP is it’s own reward.
