Space legs? How about Mech legs!

I've long thought bout the prospect of exploring a station or settlement outside of your ship, but lets face it, there is no real point to it. But since planetary landings came into play and the SRV's allows us to actually explore outside out ship it, it got me thinking. Elite's engine might not be able to allow us to stand up from our cockpits, but I believe it sure as hell can move us to the cockpit of a mech of some sorts. I mean the loading screen between ship and SRV could just as easily be translated to ship and mech. You already can fit hangers for SRV's as well as fighters on some ships. Would the additional hanger of a mech be that much different. Ok it might be Iol I'm not a developer but hear me out.
With some clever thinking and reusing existing modules I think it could be done. Procedurally generated settlements could be added where its more like a small city with skyscrapers where mechs can use different kind of tactics like urban combat, gorilla warfare or hit and run tactics to achieve a a goal. Doesn't have to be huge. You frag all the mechs, scan a data point or gather a materiel just like you would in an SRV. Then have your ship EVAC you. Multi crews could even have one player fly the ship and provide cover fire or act like a get away ship.
I don't know about you but , I believe the Elite engine is really capable of implementing this layer into the game without messing around too much with whats already present within the game. What do you guys think?

Oh yeah! Thought something looked wrong there.

I think the point is immersion, same as atmos, its all just immersion. I'm all for mechs and different types of SRVs but common man, that would not change the fundamental game play much, it would be a cockpit with legs which is just a first person camera that moves. That's essentially space legs. If we can travel from point a to b in our ships, why would it be any more difficult to travel from a to b on foot, I'm sure they will adjust their game engine to make the player no longer just a moving ship. Now imagine, space legs + mechs. Imagine a Titan fall 2 moment where you launch your Mech from orbit and it lands on the ground. You exit the mech to look at the local vegetation and as you walk below your mech you look up at its epicness than decide to climb back up into the cockpit and engage engines... oh yessss one can dream

I envision dropping into low orbit in my cutter and exiting through the cargo hatch in a special transport limpet, in nothing by my Remlok suit. When I finish my expedition, I call for pick up, the limpet comes and gets me and returns me to my ship in orbit. Then I'm off and up out.

Well, I'm not terribly fussed about space-legs but if we do get 'em I really want to be able to wander around stations, making deals and buying stuff, I want to be able to snoop around abandoned settlements and get involved with something like Alien Thargoid Isolation.

Not really interested in Big Stompy Robots unless it's a game all about Big Stompy Robots.
Just been playing through Subnautica again (finally finished it rather than just building a giant base) and I don't think I ever used the Prawn Suit.

DBOBE did say in an interview he was really impressed by Alien Isolation IIRC.

The prawn is best used for punching things to death.

Wandering around abandoned stuff on foot is actually the only thing I want from spacelegs.
But even then, I'd be equally happy flying an SLF or small ship through a gigantic maze like abandoned structure in the dark, like Descent, with just my headlights to guide me. :)

Man this sounds epic and very immersive, the view going up from ground to orbit alone would be mint. Would love to see something like this.

No thanks.. This doesn't sound too different from srv's. Real legs should be included to add gameplay inside the ships first and then to add sense of scale letting us waking outside ships in hangars and around ships. Main transport should be vehicles. I don't like idea of mech legs or jetpacks like in nms..
I fly the ship, I land on a planet, then I walk to my SRV hangar. I drive around and I find something interesting or a dungeon then I get off the srv and proceed walking on feet to investigate the place.

Personally I don't see the obsession with space legs. Elite is not an FPS, nor would I want it to be turned into one...
If they use space legs to make you walk to a bar to get missions then that's going to get really old really quickly. Look at EVE Online, they went to all the trouble of adding Captain's Quarters, and space legs, and looking at building them out to allow access to the stations, and 2 years later removed them from the game as no-one was using them and they felt the development time could be better used elsewhere.

If you want to explore creepy stuff with a flashlight and a blowtorch, then load Half Life, or even go old school with Doom. I would much rather FDev spent the development time and money getting us atmospheric landings, cities with starports, more types of SRV, better mission servers, better universe sharding for multiplayer game play, a truly player driven economy, Power Play that meant something and actually tied into the politics of the universe, consistent background stories, proper NPC Crew (especially on the bigger ships)...
Need I continue. Once all this is done, then maybe there will be a point to being able to walk around beyond a gimmick that we'll all get tired of after 20 minutes.

And before the flames start, yes this is just a personal opinion, but I think there's so much more they sould do before working with legs...

Agreed, the devs said they are open to the idea. Personally would like to see more SRV's added first, and the ability to walk around on foot. Been playing Mech Games since the Microprose days. Would make Base Assaults and scouting more more interesting.

I dunno man..
I'm more interested in exploring creepy abandoned settlements, on foot, armed with a flashlight and a blow torch.
I really wanted to open a interstellar space scrap yard and sell junked ships and parts etc.

Apparently now we are getting space legs and FPS thargoid combat and Craftable bases so that is cool (See Frontier Leak) Source: Reddit
