Space legs? How about Mech legs!

Inspiring alternative to legs... but the 'pew-pew' lets the scenario down for me :) There are a multitude of FPS games that do it well, why try to make this game one in which its implementation would be far outside of what the game 'tries' to be, the current game content requires some 'fixing' apparently, adding more...

I think the point is immersion, same as atmos, its all just immersion. I'm all for mechs and different types of SRVs but common man, that would not change the fundamental game play much, it would be a cockpit with legs which is just a first person camera that moves.

You are exactly right. The fundamentals won't change, which means its relatively easier to implement. It slots into the game engine rather that altering it, if that makes sense. But the whole idea comes from a point of compromise. We won't be able to physically leave our seats in the near future, but we could switch to another cockpit with legs.

To be honest I'd much rather prefer Elite to stay as space sim. Don't want it to turn into another Star game (which this citizen won't mention by name XD) which will take eons to release.

No thanks.. This doesn't sound too different from srv's. Real legs should be included to add gameplay inside the ships first and then to add sense of scale letting us waking outside ships in hangars and around ships. Main transport should be vehicles. I don't like idea of mech legs or jetpacks like in nms..
I fly the ship, I land on a planet, then I walk to my SRV hangar. I drive around and I find something interesting or a dungeon then I get off the srv and proceed walking on feet to investigate the place.

If its a sense of scale ur after, may I suggest a VR HMD. I got myself a x52 pro and a HTC vive. First time I hooked them up and played Elite the sheers scale and immersion is mind boggling. I literally can't play elite with out them anymore.

Hey, why not? Spending so much time in 0-grav would make everyone's muscles atrophy too much to walk anyways… Immeeeeersion!
Unless even small ships simulate Earth gravity? In which case, spending all these years strapped to a seat has made everyone's muscles atrophy too much to walk anyways.

Don't really care about the whole space legs thing, personally. If i wanted to play a first person game where I was a person, there's already 1000 of them.

That being said, if we are going to get them the one thing I do want is the ability to get out of my ship at a station and go get a drink at the bar. If we get space legs and don't get bars where we can get a drink, I'll be miffed.

LIke the Mech idea of the OP too, but the bar is more important.

That might be a rather neat solution to some of the issues posed by walking on planets (High-G worlds etc). It would also help with regards to VR, since traditional first-person movement is frowned upon. Having some kind of cockpit might help in that regard... I don't know.

Mechwarrior 5 is out this year. IDT I want to wait another x-amount of years for something less focused on giant robit fitan than Giant Robit Fitan Game to appear in my Pretend Spaceman game. I'd imagine it'd also be relatively simpler for FD to iterate on the SRV and SLF for new vehicles.

I think nextgen gaming will get much closer to the One Game to Rule Them All dream we all have, but it's not doable right now to have a game that does everything, and does it well. Yes GFR would be cool (if done well). No, I will not be sad it they never appear, because there's plenty of spaceship stuff I'd rather have first in my spaceship game.

Mechs with spider legs, climbing canyon walls on Mars. I think Ziggy Stardust wrote a song about it. Would be awesome in Elite. But we might confuse humans with Thargoids when it came to close quarter combat.

I'm not interested in space legs except would very much like:
  • new SRV models (maybe one that hovers or swims);
  • multi crew members driving in SRVs;
  • SLFs that can land on planets or outposts whilst large ship sit in orbit.

Yup! Im on oculus rift. I can't play without it anymore

I've long thought bout the prospect of exploring a station or settlement outside of your ship, but lets face it, there is no real point to it. But since planetary landings came into play and the SRV's allows us to actually explore outside out ship it, it got me thinking. Elite's engine might not be able to allow us to stand up from our cockpits, but I believe it sure as hell can move us to the cockpit of a mech of some sorts. I mean the loading screen between ship and SRV could just as easily be translated to ship and mech. You already can fit hangers for SRV's as well as fighters on some ships. Would the additional hanger of a mech be that much different. Ok it might be Iol I'm not a developer but hear me out.
With some clever thinking and reusing existing modules I think it could be done. Procedurally generated settlements could be added where its more like a small city with skyscrapers where mechs can use different kind of tactics like urban combat, gorilla warfare or hit and run tactics to achieve a a goal. Doesn't have to be huge. You frag all the mechs, scan a data point or gather a materiel just like you would in an SRV. Then have your ship EVAC you. Multi crews could even have one player fly the ship and provide cover fire or act like a get away ship.
I don't know about you but , I believe the Elite engine is really capable of implementing this layer into the game without messing around too much with whats already present within the game. What do you guys think?
I have no wish just to explore a station. I would like a continuation of the adventure/mission I am on possibly be expanded into other places. Such as megaships, the space bars and other installations (why can't we land on these?), Stations, abandoned bases, generation ships, wrecks in space and on land. Having to explore and find something in these places as part of a mission or something you want yourself like materials or some kind of commodity would be great.

There is so much potential for space legs/elite feet.

Next gen gaming will have multiple games inside a larger framework, multiple publishers making a space for themselves. As an example; assume an ED galaxy, with Civ4 planets, financed by sim-stock games, and SimCity cities, etc...

...all the way down to the microscopic. Imagine, in a massive multiverse of games, the next tiny walking sim is waiting to break loose.

Sounds too eclectic to become attractive. I think FD is doing it the right way, slowly populating the galaxy, one small step at a time, while holding all the keys. It is going to take decades, but it seems, intuitively, a correct approach. How will different studios come to an agreement? Someone has to be in charge in the tower of Babel

It could be fun.
F.example they can add a mini-games for Multi-Crew Exploration - where one is flying, 2nd one is analyzing the data. 3rd one is EVA repairing a ship, or exploring some Anomaly on the planet in SRV. Than they all gather on the ship in the evening to chill and play some other mini-games, like poker or something.
Space Legs can make group exploration a fun experience, where you live on your ship with your mates through this epic adventure across the galaxy.

Stay of the magic mushrooms dude, no one else is talking about transformer ships.

Nobody should be told to stay off magic mushrooms, quite the opposite in fact! Some conversations with the Golden Teacher could make this forum a lot more mellow.

Legs, mechs, it's all the same to me -- I play this game for the six degrees of freedom. But I sure wouldn't be denying any of it from those who would enjoy some virtual legs.

Oh I don't expect to ever see that happening without some serious breakthrough in AI or a completely new approach to writing software.

Not applicable unfortunately... We can't even have normal multicrew in SRV's...

Everything is possible with time. I doubt FDev will go for FPS play style with Space Legs, like in Star Citizen. -That would undermine their effort, since SC already had it for a long time.
I am sure they are thinking more in terms of quality of life gameplay instead of a FPS space shooter.

Star citizen was born as a fps game. Elite didn't. The problem with elite is that many things that players wants can't simply be done. Maybe in Elite Dangerous 2...
