Space Madness setting in? Go Off-Piste!

On the first leg of my 5000LY trip, I set down on a mountain top and started to work my way down in an SRV. My wife asked me what I was doing as I was grimacing (I ended up doing cartwheels down the mountain side), she (a Norwegian) got a bit excited saying I was going "off-piste"... I guess I am!

Who else enjoys a bit of downhill off-piste in their SRV? :)

I thought I was alone in thinking rolling down the side of a mountain and not being sick was a sign of a good driver.

Glad to make your acquaintance.

Nice post, nice yellow 'conda ;)

Theres a small part of me judges a small part of every open world game i play based on how good the mountaineering is.

the mountaineering in Elite is ace! it can be quite a technical climb getting to the top of some if the more pointy pinnacles.

console yourself with the fact that i'm sad enough to usually drive up and then back down again if i find a good peak. :D (landed on the top of the mountain? thats... CHEATING! ;))

on that note, do we need an elite mountaineering club? i'd like to know where the best hills in the bubble are

i can't remember where this one was but it was a good couple hours of edge of the seat action getting up and 10 minutes of terror getting down

I went off-piste once

Never again

Seriously, a hovering SRV would be so badass. I don't care if it has no cargo capacity, I just want to float like a butterfly, sting like a bee

Sounds like a good idea :) I'll be out for a few weeks now though, heading to the North America Nebula on my way to 5k LY... Hopefully that'll give me some beautiful mountaineering opportunities.

I find it takes a good 30 minutes to drive down most mountains, so I don't think I could handle an hour or more to get up it in the first place! (yes I'm a weakling...)

I'd love to have a "skimmer" style SRV, flying over the dunes. You can kind of do this now with Ship Launched Fighters though :) (just have to wait for the sloooow ship)

Fighters don't have the wave scanner and can't farm materials though

I believe Mr B hinted at new, faster SRV's in the recent AMA

Actual post I'm refering to..

Hmmm on second thought... and with a little head maths (probably wrong lol)

I think 100MPH is about 45 meters per second... we're already going near that speed, awwwwWWWWWWWW self dissapointment is the worst! Just look at all the grind threads (><)

Gutted, it's always sad when you think you've got an awesome bit of evidence then you shoot yourself down. Rep for following it through & posting it still though :p

Personally I think there's already a case for slightly different SRV's, in the same way there are 3 Ship Launched Fighters for the same role, it'd be nice to have 3 slightly different versions all for the same role.

Exploration SRV - We have it, it's balanced, good for general material hunting.
Speed SRV - Weaker guns, weaker shields, more speed, less twitchyness, more planted feeling
Assault SRV - Better guns, better shields, less speed, less twitchyness, more planetd feeling

(I don't like how twitchy the SRV can be sometimes! :))

I would love to be able to deliver cargo to the little planetary outposts that don't have landing pads!

SRV garages when?

When we get rentable player outposts on planets!

I'd have mine on a mountain so I could go "off-piste" and make it my own :D

heh. as exhilerating as it is to plummet down at break neck speed i do enjoy the climb as well. It can get very tactical picking your way up a cliff using small platforms and gets very tense near the summits when a slight error can mean a 5km drop :D

but yeah it takes a while, a good mountain can be an evenings work.

Is there a way to measure height above mean surface level (obvs not above sea level) in elite? at the moment the best way of finding altitude is to fly straight from the summit and wait until your ships altitude stops rising. not exactly scientific ;)

Reminds me of the old climbing levels in Team Fortress Classic, I did enjoy them a little too much...
