Okay, we put a man on the moon in 1969, for its time it was an amazing feat, it opened peoples minds & the sci fi film and fiction genre started. However putting the man on the moon was a race against the russians to get there first. since then everything has come to a stop. Sure we put loads of probes on mars and spent billions on pointless experiments like finding out the effects of lego and china teacups in space etc... From 1969 onwards people expected to have a colony on the moon, an american flag on mars and able to live in space stations orbiting earth by now.

I would like to see a man on mars by the time I die, but it seems its now up to the Russians or chinese. I do know what russian astronauts have been doing tests to see the effects of being locked in tight confined spaces for up to 6 months (the estimated time to reach mars) and it seems only those with the strongest mental strentgh can handle this, but the russians really are hard b'stards so who knows. What does everyone else think about this?

Proper commercial exploitation of space needs to begin before it becomes cst effective to keep humans in space. Even then I wonder if space will remain the domain of robotic explorers for quite some time.

Would take some pressing need to get it moving like war, greed or famine but who wants any of those?

I think Michael is correct. It must make business sense before we can call ourselves a space fairing race. In the beginning it will take long term investment to set up mining and production facilities off world, but once those resources and products start to flow, the whole planet will benefit from it. Not only that, all the dangerous and environmentally damaging social and economic activities we get up to today could also be moved off world, giving the poor old Earth a rest for once.

If we wait for governments to act it will never happen. They cant see past their own nation centred concerns. So to explore and use space properly, we will have to leave such notions of nationhood in the airlock. :D

but no in the long run something may need to be done, because experts say the explosion in population over the last few years may present a huge problem in less than 40 years time. We are already seeing problems here in the UK with house waiting lists and councils making 4 people families stay in a bedsit because they have nothing to upgrade them to. Humans are a very resource hungry race and soon there won't be enough food to go around if our population continues to rise at the speed it already is. if left to the government it won't happen because they tend to be only interested in looking after their own borders and claiming all the resources for themselves and wasting most of them. so a private contractor or scientific genius who can crack all the astrophysics problems is the way forward

oh just you wait, when people see their potential, they may team up with the scientific experts over at Yutani Corp and make one big merged company. Like Weyland Yutani

maybe with the 100 year starship program, we could overcome our limitations.
i could foresee artificial womb technology and sleeper tubes becoming viable.
Then 2nd generation genetic unlocking of raw physical strengths and abilities.
Mankind is meant to go to other worlds unencubered, dammit!!

with genenged crops and fauna terraforming should work.
