Space Travel in ED during those 'quiet' times

Reading the latest news about in-system travel has got me even more excited about this game as the way FD are going about it is pretty much what I'd hoped for (and many others judging by the comments). However I can't help but wonder if we'll lose something in our desires to zip about systems fast cruising, and the galaxy as a whole when hyperspacing.

Sometimes the journey is as important as reaching the destination.

I've been watching some fan made Star Citizen videos lately (another game I can't wait for), and this mock-up video I've linked of space travel is also something I had envisioned would be possible to experience in a space sim someday. Like I say, its fan made so I'm not sure if travel in SC will be this sedate, but I would have hoped it would be possible in ED to also sit back and enjoy the journey in some cases. I fear fast traveling to other star systems will be too instantaneous, or to in-system POI's over too briefly to make experiences like this possible to sit back, relax, and enjoy. Thoughts?

Compared to the previous proposal the new system is less instantaneous. All you could do before was to select a POI and warp over to it automatically. Now you have the ability to pretty much do whatever you want. So if you want to take in the scenery just go slower. ;)

Indeed. Supercruise might be a lot faster than the slower 'normal' space speed of 500m/s, but at its fastest setting it will probably still get you from Earth to Saturn in over 40 minutes (unscientific guessography). So amble away. :)

Nice video!
Yes, I hope we will be able to take in the views in the 'middle gear'. I'm really happy with the way intra system travel is taking shape! Obviously the proof is in the pudding, but so far I like what I'm reading.

I guess I'm thinking more about hyperspacing between systems. The video is a journey to a distant nebulae that is probably light-years away, but the idea is the same. Long distances like that (or interstellar journeys in general) would be enjoyable for some if there was an option for a more sedate way to traverse through hyperspace. Possibly as an option; normal/cruise.

We can't pause multiplayer so this would be a nice option to have while traveling to distant worlds - gives you time to have a bit of downtime away from your controls. The hyperspace mode in the capital ship video was excellent and perfect for the situation - answering a distress call to get there ASAP etc, but for a run of the mill trade run an option to 'slowboat' it would be nice. Gives the player time to nip out and make a cup of coffee, take a break etc, and come back and relax and enjoy the rest of the journey before getting back into the nitty gritty of it all when exiting hyperspace.

When waking aboard your ship comes in it would also give the pilot time to visit different areas of his ship, carrying out repairs, moving cargo around etc while traveling through hyperspace. That's how I envisioned long-distance travel would be like. But always have the option to have the insta-travel like in the cap ship video for those that want it.

just to go from mars to earth would take at least a few minutes at light speed, 8 minutes from the earth to the sun, and of course more if we dont go that fast.

but the scenary will only get really interresting when approaching a POI, the stars wont move that much when leaving sol to alpha centauri for instance, actually almost not at all while crossing a system.
and planets are so small you wouldnt see any(or small dots maybe) before being already relatively close, if real distances and sizes are respected. i dont know how FD is gonna represent the effect of speed, but the truth is there's not really anything to give that impression except planets&stars.
it's almost like being on a boat in the middle of a perfectly quiet ocean, with no land to look at for hours.

IIRC you can queue up your jumps in the navigation computer .. each jump point will take a few minutes to spin up the drives (barring being attacked) so that's perhaps where you could enjoy some relaxing time.

As i understand it nothing prevented you from using the hyperdrive in system? so you maybe got there faster?

The proposal permits in-system mini jumps that will make it much faster to get anywhere. However the disadvantage is that those might be more expensive in fuel cost (resources consumption has not yet been discussed nor presented).

Yes but i meant cruise drive and hyperdrive in system

I certainly hope we get something like this, especially when they get interiors in-game. I'd love to just relax and wander my ship and then suddenly have to scramble back to the cockpit for some emergency. It'd add a whole new level of immersion for me.
