I've heard that there will be larger player controlled (not necessarily pilotable) ships implemented at some point.
And that there's some dissatisfaction with having to move great distances between ships.
I'd like to propose a new ship. A "space yacht" thing.
Basically it would be a large, multi decked ship, a bit bigger than the current freighters. Think a superyacht with a heli-pad.
These could be single person or multi person craft, (basically a mobile storage unit) with approximately these capabilities.
Very large jump range
Good cargo space (for modules, assuming they let us have those off ships) but not capable of carrying commodities.
A small strike craft hangar, capable of holding two small craft (eagle, sidewinder, viper) or one large one (cobra, asp) and the capability to launch and outfit them. (With internal ammunition storage tanks that you have to pay to refill)
No offensive weaponry, but maybe hardpoints for point defense weapons (2 max).
No mining or refining capability.
This ship would open up a world of RP elements including small gang combat, solo explorer "baseships" and traveling bounty hunters, to name a few.
Also (when implemented) internal ship compartments, living quarters, common areas, etc...
This ship can either be player controlled through console commands from a piloted ship, or by direct piloting. It would be mainly relegated to storage, transport and refitting of small craft, storage for its equipment (not commodities), and long distance jumps between regions.
It could also serve as a player "home" or captains quarters where (when implemented) clothing, personal effects, small arms, cosmetic changes, and mail/social things can be handled. With space for passengers a possibility.
In return for all of this capability, the yacht would have a large fuel tank that will drain at a set rate (inhabited or not, logged in or not) in order to maintain the onboard systems, and would require regular jump fuel before jumping out of the system.
Special fuel type could be created for these class of "capital" ships, and "drydock" refueling stations implemented where you could pull in for refueling (and/or only certain types of stars for scooping), as these would obviously be too large to dock with the average station.
This sort of ship would also open up long term residency in systems or areas with a lack of dockable stations or those systems on the edge of "civilization", and will help prevent clogging of popular systems and stations.
Ok, ok, its a firefly, im asking the devs for a firefly. (Minus the cargo hauling)Pretty please?
