SpaceEngine 0.990 Stem release

So does anyone know if all your controls and save named systems and planets and such from the pre Steam version transfers over to this one? Or is it completely changed where I'd have to remap everything and lose all the saved names and stuff I've had from the past?

I don't have SE on my computer atm, but I've had two versions in the past and it is amazing. I will have to get the latest. From my past experience (unless its changed), I would concentrate on just going places (goto land on, etc.). The library for our galaxy is astonishing. Going to other galaxies is so cool. However, trying to fly the ships really slowed me down. I could not get the hang of the flight control interface (but I didn't try very long before I'd just go exploring). I don't remember Star Wars cruisers available before. That would be fun.

I bought it, looking forward to starting my exploration on the edge of the universe and making sexy screen shots of my fav spots that nobody else will ever see.

I bought a steam link awhile ago, Im hoping to get it working on the big tv so my daughter and I can learn about astronomy together.

After we find cool looking stuff we can actually research what it is and learn as we go. I guess the game has built in information about everything which is very cool.

Just got this on steam, and am enjoying it but, of course, makes me wonder about the possibilties for Elite. I seem to like the way it generates landscapes than Elite does. It seems more varied and somehow lighter? easier? on my computer..i.e. it runs smoother. I'm at the 'Camera' tutorial showing the eclipse of Europa by Jupiter. Nice! Is that a visual choice thing? Can Elite do the same? Forseeing jumping back and forth between them both for the next while. Good stuff!

I really love it. I get why people explore in Elite. I can't do the loading screens over and over to myself anymore. Enter Space Engine. The auto exposure seems wonky right now so you have to constantly tweak exposure settings and modes to get a good scene to get good shots, but its fun in its own way. Being able to fly through the universe at 326.16 million light years per second is pretty sweet to.

I was able to sit with my daughter who is 7 and properly show her the scale of a solar system, a galaxy, the universe. Bind blown. We spent the next couple hours exploring. No down time, no loading screens. If you wanted to boil down a experience to the pure unadulterated core, this is it.

The best part (Ive done this for four people now) when you zoom out of the milky way and its dark and then the billions of lights come up, everyone says oh look more stars and I just look at em and smile and say no, those arnt stars, they are galaxy's. Watching peoples minds melt is so fun.

The program is worth the price of a triple a game just so you grasp the scale of the universe with a visual representation. Everything else is a bonus.

The previous version, .98, is free, if anyone wants to try it first. I’ve been using it for a while, and its just as jaw dropping, though it doesn't have all the new stuff that .99 does, obviously.

I did wonder when it would become a paid for product, it is is truly stunning.

Does anyone know if you can buy .99 outside of Steam?

:(

Damn. Looks like I’ll be sticking with .98 then. Ah well, it’s not exactly shabby as it is :)

Seems more than a few people having problems with exposure as they changed the system for .99, I have to constantly fight it to make things look good. People are saying its much better in .98, maybe better to wait till its ironed out some.

Good to know, thanks very much for the info! .98 is still stunning, I’ll be patient and wait out the early adopter phase... maybe by then it will be available directly or through GoG or somewhere other than Steam, too.

I guess one of the big things in .99 was new ways of doing the nebula, but non procedural nebula still use the old way. Ive only found small red / purpleish ones so far in my organic exploring but they look really good.

You can search for anything, but I just travel and discover organicly, I don't search anything and its very rewarding when I find a beautiful vista, nebula, a planet with life or even a black hole. I found one the other day with 500,000 m and its the biggest I've found by far most being tiny. They look so good it actually gave be goosebumps and a creepy vibe as I looked into it.

Just noted this on the Steam page:

"“The full version is planned to have a more complete set of features, such as:
  • An expanded and refined graphics engine (e.g. 3D water and clouds, vegetation, shadows, etc.)
  • Completed Flight Simulator gameplay (e.g. spaceship physics, navigation, autopilot, etc.)
  • Updated Planetarium (more tools and features, updates of astronomical catalogs, support of the full GAIA star catalog)"
I wonder how deeply they develop the flying part... how awesome it would be to do a never-ending expedition!

I think they going for full like Orbiter flight mechanics (plus Alcubierre drive for longer travels). SE already has pretty elaborate orbiting/physics mechanics and you can map hotas axis/buttons to whatever you like. Worth adding there is even seamless transition from space to atmospheric flight but the last one does not feel good at the moment.

I know I sound like a cheapskate, but is it no longer possible to get SE for free? I'd love to try it, but I don't think I'll buy it. It's more of a "oh, that's cool" for 30 minutes thing for me than it is a game / tool I would use like ED.

I just bought it because I felt like giving €21 for the developers.

Just trying it may be an underwhelming experience, it probably shines only when you tweak the visual settings to realistic mode. Watch OA's latest video about it.

Older versions are still free to download on the website. You can find the changes here from the latest free version to the first pay version. So you can try the free, see what you think of it, and know what extras you can expect from the paid one.
