Spaceship Imagination as a new exploration vessel...

I had a thought when I was re-watching NDT's Cosmos on Netflix. How awesome would it be to have a strictly exploration vessel, sleek and fast designed for optimum jump distance with maximum fuel efficiency. Even more so with Niel Degrasse Tyson at your side informing you at random on unique astronomical information to the sector / system / celestial body that you are currently at? Even more so if the ship was modeled after the spaceship Imagination in his series Cosmos. I think it would really follow in the spirit of exploration presented in Elite: Dangerous and his series Cosmos as well as help to subdue the monotony that occurs while exploring... thoughts follow explorers?

Even better if FD can collaborate with NDT himself to voice over the information, with the mutual goal shared by both organizations of remaining scientifically accurate and providing general education on the science of the universe. Is this something remotely feasible and would you as fans like it?

How about we let elite stand on its own two feet instead of asking them to pay licensing fees to latch on to some other franchise in a gimicky fashion like this.

next you'll be asking for star destroyers and a USS emterprise.

Admittedly - I don't know much about licensing. I guess I have this naive perception of scientists and science networks as being more altruistic than your typical group... Can they not hire him as an independent consultant to do voice overs and feature just him instead of him and the ship? Would that help, or be just as difficult?

Niels' show isn't really some 'altruistic scientific enterprise' .. It's a prime time television show that was commissioned by an international television conglomerate for one reason: to make money.

I would love a pure exploration vessel (asp is actually multipurpose).

It is actually an interesting exercise to design a ship that can be used for exploration but little else. Here is my attempt:

(a) Take an asp chassis.

(b) Remove all weapon hardpoints (keep utility hardpoints).

(c) Downgrade maximums for power plant, thrusters, life support and distributor (maybe to class 3). Keep FSD at 6. Keep fuel tank at 32.

(d) Have the following classes of utility slots: 6, 3, 2,2,2, 1,1.

(e) As compensation for above nerfs, lower chassis weight from 280 to maybe 150. Also give it high maneuverability rating, at least 8.

I don't know how much it would cost, but having Neil DeGrasse Tyson voice tracks while jumping to and from systems, having him narrate the detailed descriptions of the planetary bodies as you detailed scan them.

Genius.

It really shouldn't be hard to get him on board either, it seems he genuinely loves space and talking about space.

Finally! Someone who isn't an inherent pessimist!

I am fully on board with this idea. Especially if it means having more windows in the cockpit. One of the main features of any exploration type vessel should definitely be a maximized view. Even if we're talking a stupid looking bubble on the top or front of the ship. My favorite part of exploration is seeing the sights. Learning about them at the same time would make it even more amazing.

Asp Explorer is an exploration ship. ;) While it is also reasonable at most other things, its primary purpose is exploration. It's in the name... :p

Asp is a multipurpose ship. For example it is an excellent midrange pirate ship, and a good rare trader. It's not enough to point at the name, you have to look at the loadout potential. Asp gives up explorer potential by having weapon hardpoints, enough utility class slots to trade, etc. The point is to design a ship that can explore very well, but do nothing else. For example, the vulture can only fight well, but is a bad trader and a mediocre explorer (too heavy). The t9 only trades well, etc.

^^This.

If you're exploring it's about THE VIEW and with multiple camera views, too (i.e., 3rd person and 1st person views without the canopy frame getting in the way).

In WoW I have 101 options to zoom/pan and more with addons, so can create videos with multiple effects, for example.

If they ever come up with another ship more suitable than the Asp for exploring I just hope it has a decent cockpit view , a 180' degree lateral and 90 degree vertical with no frame work would be nice.

What would be cool is a 'switch view' command for some of the ships with other view ports - the view from the Anaconda observation deck should be vast, for example.

Orcas (and other Saud Kruger ships) would probably have the most here.
