You do not have to restart the map, I did the same thing. Cant remember exactly where but there's an option to restart the mission.
Hm, if I understand this right, don't restart the map. Go to the command center, button top left, and on the screen that pops up go to the right bottom field. There the main missions are shown and when a mission fails for whatever reason you can restart it there when it's unlocked.
