Like we have Hull plating strong to thermal/weak to kinetic and vice versa, I have been wanting to see the same done with shield (since before horizon) and guessed it would turn up soon, but nothing 
In the hope there was going to be such a thing I was looking forward to flying my FAS with thermal shielding and whatever the Hull plating is, that is strong to kinetic, and it would have maybe worked like this...
All thermal weapons would have a really hard time getting the shields down but kinetic weapons would pass though the shield and hit the Hull, even if they are full active, and because the hull has higher resistance to kinetic damage (the stuff already in game) there is the tactical advantage.
So someone attacking will either have to go straight to kinetic weapons and take on the harden hull plating or struggle at taking down the shield with thermal weapons, so then they can zap the ships hull with thermal (which would be weak to, because of the hull plating type)
...and of course, allow the opposite set up with kinetic protective shield that let thermal though.
Would also give some interesting defense setup and maybe make the specialized hull types more useful
