It would be nice if we could have specialized cargo racks for different cargo types.

Pros: Double cargo capacity of cargo rack

Cons: Can only carry one TYPE of cargo [Food, Minerals, Livestock/Passengers (life support rack)]

If all cargo weighs the same 1 ton from ores, meat and beer. Also cargo container are shape the same. Why do we need different cargo hold?

In the old Elite we had life support in order to handle live animals and separate passenger modules.

It could simply be that a special cargo rack has a more efficient stacking procedure and cargo customized containers instead of a universal container design.

Volume wise one tonne of minerals and one tonne of meat does not take up the same volume so weight could also indicate a certain space.

One tonne of cotton is not the same volume as one tonne of lead.
