Specialized legacy firmware

Where, exactly, do I find this? I've been searching for 3 days, and haven't come across it. It had been the only thing I have been searching for, as well.

It says it may come from signal sources. Does this mean the wrecks? Or ships destroyed in the sources? Anywhere else to look?

I have also been unable to find any missions offering them as a reward. Do certain stations offer them more than others?

I have found some at "Encoded" USS in supercruise. They are usually derelict ships/stations with a scannable object found under contacts.

Cheers!

Edit: The encoded USS also have rare/very rare materials from time to time. Always good to stop at those (encoded).

They are fairly rare, too. roughly 16 hours of USS grinding to get 2. YMMV

3 from missions 1 from USS (for me) just about the rarest mission reward i've seen with the possible exception of things like polonium if there are missions for such.

Mission completion for me too; low paying mission I would not otherwise look at, but now with materials, I have to look at all missions offering mat's.

Think I went into USS degraded signal source threat zero, scanned a data thing as I heard "I can't believe anyone fell for that" then I left. Hadn't been looking for one myself.... somebody's law I guess.

Seems ridiculously rare for a level one upgrade material

It is, I learned very quickly which recipes were viable to be repeated for leveling and which weren't, you need to bypass this one If you can (I don't know which engineer your trying to work with)

In that case skip it; there are alternative upgrades at grade 1 and you can save it (if you ever find it) for higher level upgrades (it's used up to grade 3).

I found mine in several encoded emission USSs, and used my sensor to san the private data beacon that was there, and also from missions. The USS data beacon is rng what you get out of it. Not easy to get hold of. I think I have 3 or 4 after a lot of searching. The missions I got from outpost stations.

I want grade 1 dirty drives for my courier. The point is level one upgrade materials shouldn't be this hard to acquire

I certainly wouldn't blow it on a grade 1 upgrade in that case, as it's required for grade 2 and 3 upgrades. I'd be inclined to look at the very least taking your reputation up to at least grade 2 with something easy like drive strengthening or shielded FSD, and probably grade 3.

But yes, there does seem to be a mismatch between supposed rarity of materials and actual rarity.

Not quite sure I follow. All I'm really interested in modding right now is the engines of my Courier.

First off, you do have the Enhanced Performance Thrusters, yes? If not then you can buy them from the outfitting section of the engineer's base.

As for the upgrades: there are multiple grades of modification, from 1 through to a maximum of 5 (although not all engineers reach this level). The modification for each grade is better than the last. If you look at dirty drive tuning then a grade 1 modification is minimal, grade 2 a bit better and grade 3 fairly decent (within the bounds of the RNG). You need two Specialised Legacy Firmware for grade 1 and grade 2 dirty drive tuning, but only one Specialised Legacy Firmware for grade 3. So blowing two of them on the grade 1 mod is, relatively speaking, rather wasteful.

Instead you could build up your reputation with the relevant engineer by asking them to carry out other modifications. 3 on-grade modifications will get your reputation with them up to the next level, so 3 grade 1 modifications will get you to grade 2, then 3 grade 2 modifications will get you to grade 3. These modifications can be anything that the engineer provides, so you could burn through some of your common materials to get your reputation with the engineer up to grade 3 and then get them to do a grade 3 dirty drive tuning. This will give you a better result thrusters-wise and you'll only need to hunt down one Specialised Legacy Firmware rather than two.
