Specialized legacy firmware

First off, you do have the Enhanced Performance Thrusters, yes? If not then you can buy them from the outfitting section of the engineer's base.

As for the upgrades: there are multiple grades of modification, from 1 through to a maximum of 5 (although not all engineers reach this level). The modification for each grade is better than the last. If you look at dirty drive tuning then a grade 1 modification is minimal, grade 2 a bit better and grade 3 fairly decent (within the bounds of the RNG). You need two Specialised Legacy Firmware for grade 1 and grade 2 dirty drive tuning, but only one Specialised Legacy Firmware for grade 3. So blowing two of them on the grade 1 mod is, relatively speaking, rather wasteful.

Instead you could build up your reputation with the relevant engineer by asking them to carry out other modifications. 3 on-grade modifications will get your reputation with them up to the next level, so 3 grade 1 modifications will get you to grade 2, then 3 grade 2 modifications will get you to grade 3. These modifications can be anything that the engineer provides, so you could burn through some of your common materials to get your reputation with the engineer up to grade 3 and then get them to do a grade 3 dirty drive tuning. This will give you a better result thrusters-wise and you'll only need to hunt down one Specialised Legacy Firmware rather than two.

I know what you mean, but I don't have access to grade 2 and 3 modifications. I need to do modifications to get grade 3 so it only costs me 1 firmware. How am I supposed to get grade 3 without getting past grade 1, which requires 2.

Grades are per-engineer not per-module. So do some modifications of a different module (e.g. FSD), for which you do have the materials, to increase your reputation with the engineer and unlock higher grades for all modules.

I am pretty sure i found them by scanning data points on planets, crashed nav beacons and that kind of stuff.
Sure you don't mix with Cracked Industrial Firmware or other Firmware thingy ? Cause that what you re supposed to loot in data point.

By the way, I'm not extremely fan of the E Thruster on the courier, I loose 1° in pitch speed for 8 m/s more top speed.
That being said, my ICourier is too close to Optimal Mass but can't really see how to improve (removing Military seem a bit suicidal with the NPC).

Because of the way the engine numbers work, you real optimal mass is actually 1/2 of your listed optimal mass, just fyi. :)

Personally, I would drop the mil spec armor on the Courier. I would want to play to the strengths of the ship - agility, speed, and big shields. By focusing on armor, you're patching a weak spot, but at the expense of your strengths.

Problem is i'm not so great as a fighter and I often finish in head on situation where we both deal significant damage to each other.
I ve got 2 shield booster with thermal reduction and that a good boost in protection but the regen rate is not scaled with your larger capacity and SCB seems to have trouble resplenishing a significant amount 'cause of head on situation an i m saving the chaff for when i m in a pinch (the SCB's class 3 still).

There's definitely something hinky with the RNG distribution. Given that the grades (in terms of rarity) for firmware are:

Grade 1 - Specialised Legacy Firmware
Grade 2 - Modified Consumer Firmware
Grade 3 - Cracked Industrial Firmware

Tonight I've hit 83 Encoded or Degraded Emission sources. Of those, 31 had Private Data Beacons in them. Most were rubbish data ("Unexpected Emission blah blah"). 11 had Modified Consumer Firmware. 4 had Cracked Industrial Firmware. Guess how many had Specialised Legacy Firmware?

None.

Pretty much the same story last night too.

C'mon, FD. If Specialised Legacy Firmware is supposed to be the "common" variant, then at least make it so that's actually true, especially since it's used in so many blueprints. Alternatively, let us substitute higher-grade materials in the same class for blueprints (preferably with a higher chance of a special effect).

Try scanning data points on planets, plenty of stuff on those.

Take a look through the upgrades you have the materials for, even if you don't want the upgrade. If the materials for these upgrades are common and/or ones you have plenty of materials for, buy several rerolls for the upgrade but don't install it. This will clear out some of the useless (to you) materials and will raise your reputation with the engineer rather quickly.

Had that idea earlier. Couldn't find any...

For those having this problem: planetary bases have scannable data points. The number of "+" marks next to the base's name denote the rarity of the data. Solution? Find an anarchy system with a 1-+ planetary base, club the thing's turrets to death, waltz in with your SRV, and sequentially scan the points. Took me a week to figure it out, but boy is it effective.

EDIT: If you have medium hardpoints, mount a dumbfire launcher or two. Their splash damage is ridiculous, to the point where you can pretty much annihilate most of the skimmers in a small base with a single shot. An added bonus is that it's really funny.

Mate, if that solves my problem, I'll put you on my Christmas list. Twice.

Just remember to park your ship a kilometer or so away, out of range of the big laser turret. There's a teeny-weeny bug with them right now that might cause them to come back to life immediately after you destroy the settlement's power generator. It won't fire on the SRV, but that bug's killed my Corvette once already (report resolved and compensated, thanks to the relatively quick support team).

I've been finding them in Degraded Signal Sources--anytime there is a Personal Data Point (I believe that's what it's called) they can be scanned and roughly 50% of the time will yield Specialized Legacy Firmware. I just about tore the galaxy a new black hole before I figured that out.

Really? I dropped into five of those last night, and they were all 'data' materials when I scanned them.
