Species Appeal Problems

Below is a list made by Nekoron on the Steam Community on animals by species appeal. I searched for it just out of curiosity about the popularity of animals. I was specifically wondering about the popularity of Giant Pandas because in real life they are extremely popular in zoos. To my surprise, the Giant Panda is surprisingly low. I wanted to ask you guys what species do you think are lower/ higher than they should be? There is another list for exhibit animals but there isn't as much variation.

I don't know about that list, but it has always surprised me that orangutans in my zoos are sometimes the most popular animal even if I have other animals like big cats or pandas.

Yea the apes don’t surprise me. Pandas just seem like a big deal because they literally bring people to zoos in terms of marketability, so they should definitely be higher than them. I think that lions are too high, it makes a little more sense when you consider they’re west African lions but Most people see lions at the zoo so I personally think they should be grouped with the other big cats.

I feel like the African Elephant should be lower. Yes, they are popular for sure, but it seems when I get lions as well, they always go straight to the top. Mainly bc I only have one franchise with polar bears, so I can't judge if that's the right place for them without more data. I do feel like Giant Pandas should be a bit higher. Tigers as well, tbh.

By the way, thanks for sharing this. I had no idea there was an actual list out there that tallied all the appeal. Saving this for sure.

You're welcome! I feel like people don't talk about the species appeal enough.

Yea African Elephants should only be a little higher than Indian Elephants and the Tigers should be higher IMO as well. They should be tied or slightly under the lions. And the lions should definitely be lower. I feel like Polar Bears are ok but Pandas should definitely be at the top in my opinion they are just way too popular in real life zoos

I'm not sure if the Giant Pandas should be that much higher. They're a species that almost always make it into my zoos unless I'm strictly doing a continent theme, and when I have lions as well the lions are always at the top. I'd say some of that could be from welfare and feed quality differences, but Giant Pandas always get the top level of food since they're my favorite in game species.

I'm also suprised llamas are at the bottom. You'd think they'd at least be more popular than peafowl. Thats it, next zoo I do first two species will be llamas and peafowl (ugh, just when I was swearing off adding peafowls in my zoos too).

I'm basing the Panda's popularity on real-life zoos where people will travel across the nation to go to a zoo that has Pandas. (As I have done before)

Llamas should be higher than peafowl but not by much. I'd be ok if they stayed there since they're a domesticated species

Ah I follow your thinking now, was thinking in game appeal numbers vs how the in game actually shows what's most popular, not even thinking about real life zoo. And yes, you're absolutely right, if they were to tie in real life numbers I would think Pandas might well should be at the very top. Here in the states we only have 4 zoos that have them. I believe 2 other zoos have been trying to get them for a number of years, but they haven't had any luck yet. I know it's a very special animal for zoos to get, have to be given permission from China and I think they have to pay to have them as well (may be misthinking on that last bit). I would have absolutely no problem if the numbers were reconfigured in the game and the Giant Pandas had the highest appeal.

Yea Zoos across the world do not own their pandas, they are all on loan from the Chinese government (except one zoo in Mexico). I hope San Diego gets their Pandas back, their loan ended last year and they're trying to renew it. It's extremely expensive to hold Pandas, but for a lot of zoos, it's worth it because of their popularity (hence why I'm saying they should be at the top). I live in Florida and I've been to both Zoo Atlanta and Memphis Zoo and seen them :). My family when I was younger specifically took me to Zoo Atlanta to see them since they are my favorite animal.

In addition to the Pandas, I think Komodo dragons could use a buff. They seem to be suffering from the "copy-paste syndrome", resulting from their stats being copied from the Nile monitor. The two definitely are not on the same level in terms of popularity. Komodos could potentially be up there with the larger crocodilians in terms of popularity.

I would say some of the exhibit animals also suffer from the "copy-paste syndrome". Can't see how a Goliath Frog has the same appeal as the two Beetles.

The Goliath Frog and Komodos are definitely an issue. The suggestions to move them with the crocs seems right to me
