Species That You Don't Necessarily Want, but Think Should Be in the Game

The idea occurred to me that when we post wishlists, some people will post animals that are iconic, endangered, important to zoos, or so on, while others will generally post animals that they just happen to like, whether they are common or niche. So I thought it might be fun to start a topic for us to share which species we don't really care about all that much (in terms of whether they make it in or not, that is), but that we think should be in the game by virtue of them being common in zoos, particularly well-known, or conservationally important.

To kick things off, I'll start with the Sumatran tiger. We already have two tigers in the game, and in a perfect world I would say the Sumatran tiger should have been added to the base game instead of the Bengal. However, I don't expect it to be added now, nor am I particularly bothered by that fact. The reason I think it should have been or should be included, however, is that the Sumatran tiger is far more widespread in zoos than the Bengal, and has a particular focus in the AZA. It's critically endangered, and the last population within the Sunda tiger subspecies.

Another one for me is dromedary camel. Honestly, another camel doesn't excite me that much, and I'm not really missing it, however I do think that it should be in the game, and not only because of all the dromedary-related scenery. Dromedaries have been in zoos since zoos began, and are far more common than Bactrian camels.

The Most obvious picks for me would be leopard, the american alligator and the cougar.
All 3 of them are Zoo staples and should be in the game, eventhough they arnt that exciting for me as an less buff jaguar, a more social crocodile and a brown cat, that i would actually want the Most of these three.
They just arnt very unique, while still being iconic.
Im also Not really excited about sealions.
They should absolutly be in the game at one point, but they just dont really spike my interest.

Talking about species I've seen in many zoos that I am not looking for (not saying i wouldn't want them, but they wouldn't be my first picks), I'm gonna be honest and say that the following are it:

  1. Capybara - Yes, they're common and highly asked for, but I only want them because they are found in many zoos
  2. California sea lion - same as above
  3. Moose - this would fill a big gap on NA/Europe roster and add a 2nd deer, but it's not my preference
  4. Arctic fox - I personally would prefer the gray or red fox, but this'll be good, too
  5. Leopard (any) - ironically, I've never seen a true leopard in a zoo. Weird, huh? But they are common
  6. Domestic species - they should be, because of petting zoos, and we have the llama and bactrian camel, so it'd add to that roster

But, I will still be happy with these choices, and I would use them (so far the only animals I haven't used are the 4 new African animals because I haven't gotten around them yet. And the polar bear)

Popular on the meta list but not really something I'm excited to see, even if I wouldn't dislike their inclusion - Tasmanian Devil, Prezwalski's Horse, Black Rhino, American Alligator

Completely agree! These animals are just not common zoo animals despite their popularity (except the alligator, but we have many crocodiles).

I'd add the California Sea Lion to this list. I think it just doesn't fit well with the other stuff in the game, despite being popular.

Alligator and sea lion would fit a NA pack, but I'd only be truly happy if it were an animal pack. Otherwise, even though I'd like them, I wouldn't care for the NA pack I've hoped they add

what would you consider common in captivity? There are 184 Black Rhinos in captivity which isn't a lot but certainly is nothing to scoff at

The Black Rhino is found in 22 european zoos, compared to the White Rhino which is found in over a 100 european zoos. This is my main basis for comparison of an animal being common in captivity. The tasmanian devil, for example, is barely found in zoos outside of Australia.

This is what I found online so I understand why you said that. I guess they're just more common here so they've been more of my quintessential rhino. I guess different perspectives and all

There are around 100 places in Europe alone where you can find Prezwalski's Horses. So you can't consider that uncommon. Only around 30 parks in Europe got the Common Zebra to compare.
That's because the actual common zebra found in hundreds of European zoos is Grant's Zebra, zootierliste isn't always great with common names. Wild Horses are generally rare in worldwide zoos, with Europe being their best (though still lacking) region of representation.

That is true, I was too quick with the zebra. But I still don't think you can call the P horse uncommon

I don't have an animal I don't care about but SHOULD be in a zoo game, except for numerous bird species. But I had. Don't bite me, but I would have absolutely never missed a meerkat in my game if we wouldn't have got them. But they are extremly common, so it's good we have them now.
