Species Toy Enrichment Not Working

Hello - I'm on the third tutorial mission and attempting to raise the general animal welfare to 90%. I'm getting stuck because several of my animals have abysmal "Species Toy Enrichment". for example my Japanese Macaque is stuck on 37%. i have added several balls, boxes, ice, etc. I read that each additional enrichment item has dramatically less effect, however there are only 4 toys available so I throw all of them in there multiple times, and it won't budge above 37% so I can't pass the test.

any tips on how to raise the enrichment score?

You need enough food enrichment to get them to 100, not just toys. It won't go past around 50% without food no matter how many toys you throw at them and your screenshot shows that you don't have enough of it (it says 75% for food not 100%).

Instead of clicking the habitat and looking at the enrichment there, select one of the animals and go to the enrichment tab. It will show you if you have enough food enrichment in the enclosure for the number of animals and how much enrichment they are getting from each toy, as well as if they are getting bored with the toys.

You have a ton of balls in there, for example...but with balls, you do not get any additional enrichment after the first one. Some of the toys you get a small amount more with each, but balls is not one of them. Same goes for the ice bock and cardboard box iirc. Only the sprinkler gets a small bonus for additional ones.
Having an animal selected and the enrichment tab open while placing enrichment will show you this information as you place objects.

Additionally, over time they get bored with stuff and it doesn't provide as much enrichment, so you will want to get your research up so you have more options and can rotate them in and out of the habitat. (i.e. don't use everything available at once or they will get bored with it all and you'll have nothing to replace it with).

They never get bored with the food enrichment items though and those are always additive until you hit the desired quantity, so once you have that researched you're gauranteed at least ~50% from having enough food in there.

thank you for your quick reply! so in my screenshot I do have a single animal selected. i did what you recommended and added a food item and deleted most of the toy items. the "Food Enrichment" went up to 100%, but the "Toy Enrichment" is still stuck at 36%, I don't follow how I'm supposed to get it to go up? I'm in the tutorial so I assume all of the necessary items are already present, yes?
thanks again for your help it's much appreciated :)

also, i went to the enrichment tab to look at the toys and was wondering what the 82 out of 1680 meant. i'm assuming it's pretty bad? is this the issue?

The toys is your problem, they are bored with ALL of them except the small ball (red frown face vs. green smile face). You need to remove them from the habitat for a while until they aren't bored anymore. The 62/1680 means that they want that as their total, and you only have 62 in there. It's a factor of the amount of enrichment each animal wants compounded by how many are in the enclosure. For toys, don't worry about it and just try to get it to 100% enrichment.

For the food one, however, which shows 16/8 always make sure to have it at least set to want they want (8 in that screenshot) because if you don't you can't get overall enrichment up to 100%.. You're good on food.

Seeing as you don't have any other toys researched yet, you will have to deal with low enrichment for a while. Nothing you can do about it because you put them all in at once and they got bored with almost all of them. Remove them from the habitat for a few in game months, and research some more. When you go back to put toys back in, don't put in ALL available toys, only put in about half the total 'value" that you have available so that when they get bored with those you can remove them and put in the other half. Rinse/repeat. (so for example, if you have 3 toys total available and 2 toys are worth 25 points, and 1 is worth 50, first put in the 2 that are 25. When they are bored with those toys, remove them and put in the one that is worth 50).

Some animal types are much more demanding when it comes to toys. Bears, primates and apes particularly. If you have those in your zoo, it's always a good idea to assign vets to research them as a priority to get the toys unlocked.

Hopefully that makes sense to you, please ask if anything was unclear.

THANK YOU for the fantastic detailed explanation. i shall get to work implementing your tips and will report back.
