Newcomer / Intro Specific System Targeting Lead

I've spent some time watching videos from what seems Late Beta, and it appears when watching anything that has to do with targeting a target's specific sub-system(s), leading target reticules usually appear to allow you to strike the subsystem more easily. However, since I've played I don't see any of those as I toggle through my prey's1 delicates. I suspect they would only appear when your position is relative to the system in question. That is to say, I can't hit something on the front of their vessel if I'm on it's six and vice versa. I'm driving a Cobra Mk III with Gimbaled Beam lasers and a missile rack. I'm thinking this type of target leading may only be available on Fixed Kinetic, Energy or Hybrid weapons? I had a Rail Gun equipped at one point that was fixed that offered no additional specific sub-system leading either. May I have someone "in the know" help me out?

1.) Hardly anyone seems worthy of the moniker of prey whilst in my sights as I'm only about a week old.

I've not used railguns but I've heard they can penetrate whole ships, so there should be no worries about positioning when attacking sub-systems.

You're correct though that you can only hit a sub-system if the face that it is located on, is exposed to you, and not concealed/protected by the flank of the ship.
I've not played in a few weeks, but I've targeted subsystems and even if the face is not shown, the sub-system targeting lead (red-box) appears on the ship.

Not sure why you're not seeing it, but you've gotta identify whether you're looking at the located face or the opposite face. You can usually tell this by the way the box moves relative to the ship. If it's fixed in place you're looking at the right face. If it moves around on the ship if you change your position relative to the ship, then you're looking through the flank at the projection.

Fixed/gimballed doesn't matter as far as i know. Gimballed will track to fire on that sub-system, but it (should) still show for fixed weapons so that you can identify the location to fire upon.

I definitely see the Highlit red boxes, but from what I see in other game play videos, a small reticule appears after subsystems are targeted that seem to lead the shots to the sub-system. Maybe I'm confused?

Lasers and railguns are hit-scan weapons and don't require leading, you just need to point directly at the subsystem and shoot. If you switch to projectile weapons like multi-cannons, plasma accelerators or dumb-fire rockets the HUD will display the leading reticule.

This is exactly what I wanted to know. Thank You for that information.
