Newcomer / Intro Speed, Weight, Thrusters, and you.

So, I've actually been around for almost 2 months, and I still don't get top speed.

I thought:

1. Adding modules that weigh more will reduce your max speed.
2. The only way to increase your max speed is to reduce your weight.
3. Thruster upgrades only increase your maneuverability (pitch, roll, yaw), not your max speed.
4. Setting 4 pips to Eng will increase your max speed.

So I bought my new ship, set it up with the lightest modules according to ED shipyard, except for the FSD which is A spec, and...only go 120 instead of 130. Even with 4 pips to Eng.

Question: If I upgrade the thrusters from D to C/B/A, that will increase my weight, but will it also increase my max speed??? I though no, but...

Higher grade thrusters do increase your top speed.

With regards to this, the only reason for top speed is for gameplay reasons, though, I would like to see top speed determined by "thrust/mass" rather than some seemingly randomly generated figure, though once again, I presume this is because gameplay...

Not always, apparently. I just tested:

D spec: 78 w 2 pips, 120 w 4 pips.
C spec: 83 w 2 pips, 130 w 4 pips.
B spec: 85 w 2 pips, 130 w 4 pips.

The B's weighed 120, while C's weighed 80. I'm guessing the B's did nothing for speed because they are so much heavier. B's also lower your jump range. I suppose they would take more damage before being destroyed?

Then again, the A's weigh 80, so I have no idea why they're better.

Maybe B's are better than C's because they provide better maneuverability, and survivability, but not speed?
A's better than B's because they weigh less, increasing jump range, and provide better maneuverability and survivability, but not speed?

I went back to the C's.

Not a hard-and-fast rule, more of a rule of thumb, when it comes to module ratings,

E: cheapest, least powerful
D: lightest weight
C: heavier and more powerful than D, lighter than B
B: most heavily armored (heaviest)
A: same weight as C, most powerful
