I saw that there were some fan made ship designs in game. It let me to an interesting idea. A flying sphere. But not just any flying sphere. One revolving around the concept of revolving!
It would be a weird design where the engines/cockpit/gun are all in a sphere one one side of the ship. It only flies backwards and looks in the same direction. But it has amazing yaw/pick/roll. This means you can only shoot in the direction away from where you are heading. It's designed to shoot in reverse and other things like rotating to avoid specific damage to components by rotating to mess up shots. It's super agile and compact in order to get better weight to thrust for agility. It's the ultimate agility ship. But with the obvious stated downsides. It could even have a line of ships to go with it for different sizes. It would also be a jack of all trades or worse. Not good at anyone thing except agility. So probably a bad transport unless you get to a bigger size. Playing off the reality of pizzas and spheres to gain a lot of space as they grow internally. the outside would just be armor and small rotational thrusters and everything else including main engines pointing out from the cockpit. So no reverse thrusters. It might have better ai to control stopping by allowing the ship to auto rotate, very quickly, in order to change direction and apply reverse thrust. In fact you would need to for actual precise control of direction etc and velocity.
Basically the only applying one direction of thrusters gives the option of reducing weight more or applying heavier bigger thrusters in one direction. It also reduces internal space/mass for a better overall ship. It might actually make a good explorer. Especially at a small size. A bigger one might make a good transporter. And medium sizes might naturally be good for other things. Auto pilot might be a must. Assuming it can fit in a station of course. So unless stations change it might have to be small. Or even something like a fighter.
Visually the ship would be a sphere with a circle on one side. This circle would be the cockpit/mounts/thrusters on one side.
Variation could be made on this for many purposes.
In combat, or general use, you would push thrusters in one direction and use rotation to very quickly change the direction you are facing to in essence go forward.
Engines could either way less on this ship or it could simply have access to a wider array of engines that are much more effective because of massively reduced hull weight etc. Or it could also have in essence the front and back engines pointed in the same direction for increased thrust and reduced hull size from being a sphere, but then you still have to modify stats on parts.

Natural geometry would be the inspiration for it's abilities.

Maybe it could have a sphere inside a sphere and have that sphere with engines move from front to back. But I wonder if that might be too complicated for the game engine. Same principle though. The bigger the ship compared to the cockpit the more room for stuff.
Maybe base it on this guys artwork and say a ship designer had a big thing for ancient earth art and used it as inspiration. This would leave many ship designs available.
They could potentially be ships produced by, "The Club." or something given the potential themes.
