Spinning Rings of Gas Giant

Since it seems nobody else has managed to post this awesome effect, and one that I love so much....here it goes...

Warning: Video recording skills are really bad, reason why I havent posted this before...lol...bear with me!

ps..lol,,I swear to God, it looked so much better in my PC...recording is crappy!!! Oh well..lots to learn!! Still you get the point!

Yes!

I parked at the edge of a ring system for the night and took an image.
I came back to it the next day and the view was completely different so I took another image. It was literally the difference between day and night.

Since sunrise was approaching, I also set a static capture and let it run for 30 minutes. The ship stayed in exactly the same view, but the rocks tumbled, the planet turned, the sun rose from behind the planet, and the rings were changing angle. I've not processed the footage yet (1080p/60 is lots of GBs) but it demonstrates something similar to what you've shown in your video.

If you noticed this was not long exposure...this was live!...as live as I was playing the game!!! Those rings spin fast, fast, fast!!!....Invariably, in every planet that has at least two rings, you can notice this...is crazy!

This happened to me yesterday. Sadly I did not record it.

For me, the inner of 2 rings around the planet was spinning at a crazy speed. When I tried to enter the ring's field, they stopped spinning. Then I left the field to find the outer ring spinning! Not sure if the spinning is intentional or a bug.

Is not a bug!!! It is exactly as it should be!!! they are spinning like crazy!!

This is exactly the effect I was telling you about in this post.

As a miner, one spends a lot of time in the asteroids....if you stay there long enough, you will eventually go around the planet, into the "night" and come back out to the "day" just by being mass locked by the ring.

You know you are spinning at a huge speed when you go from "noon" to "midnight" on a ring around a Gas Giant, in a matter of 2 hours or so...

Ahhh... Guess it considers you mass locked even if the box isn't checked, lol.

Riiiiight!
Now I understand what you're getting at.

I suppose it's the same with a metal rich world I saw whipping around a star last night. This planet was visibly pulling away from me at minimum supercruise speed.
As long as I stayed a certain distance away from it, it moved swiftly in front of me. Once I got within about 10Mm of it and dropped from SC, I'd find myself "riding along" with the planet at a fixed point.
You've found the spot where you can see the rocks but aren't bound to them.

During the beta, there were some ring systems that you entered and you did not end up matching velocity when you came out of supercruise. So you were mass locked but all the rocks were rushing past at super high speed. It was super scary when it happened and if you came out of SC too close....Bang! clobbered - insta death in a hail of mountain sized rocks.
Aah you young people don't know how good you have it nowadays with these new fangled computers that match velocity for ya;) we used to have to throw out a lasso and hang on.

Well, truth be told, I have seen this effect many, many times...but because you cant capture it in a picture, and I do a lousy job in the video department, I havent shared it before.

With that being said, the method I always use is to position myself in between both rings. Then I get the spinning effect. This time around, though, I ventured into getting closer and closer and closer...expecting the spin to stop at some point...

It wasn't until very last moment, when I felt it wasn't safe to keep going, that I pulled back on the stick and went above the ring....from that position, I took the video....

So, I am not sure but I wasn't going to try and see what could happened if I kept going....17,000 ly away from home and over a month worth of scanned systems...but I will try when I get back, with an old dusty sidewinder I have....lol....something tells me, this flock was not gonna stop for me....but I can live with the doubt until I get to civilization on my own feet and not via ejection method!!! lol...

This is something I explained back in February after I had noticed it a long time before (it took me a long time to get screen capture software).
It's a cool effect:

If you want to know what happens when you fly into the fast-moving spinning ring, then watch this (I fly down into them at around the 2:50 mark):

These are awesome videos!!! Yay!!! Somebody did a professional job compared to my low budgeted movie!! lol...

Thank you for sharing!! And...what the heck?? You just crossed them like that???? You got more "guts" than I do to do that so far from home!!!

Hmm..Happy it ended well. Disappointed that it probably shouldn't? lol..nothing personal but something else than -ignore the crossing Asp effect- should be in place...either "stop" them...have the ship mass lock and then "join" the conveyor belt...or "destroy" ship via Deadly Mufasa Galactic Stampede...lol....

If you check, the second video is in the 1.2 Beta...I was lucky enough that the Beta launched whilst I was in the Eagle Nebula (and your Beta save is based on your actual save at the moment Beta is launched), and I needed to get back to civilised space quickly to try out stuff. As a result I needed to destroy my ship anyway, and I figured it was the perfect opportunity to try flying into the rings... :)

I also could take "risky" videos like flying through the asteroid field whilst in the 3rd-person perspective. It was just as well it was Beta, as this blooper video shows:
