Spinny things are fuel scoops?

Even though I've had ED since release, I've never looked at my ship externally whilst fuel scooping, as every ship I've had so far has started to heat up whilst scooping. The FDL with an A-Class scoop can sit all day over a star, so I thought I'd have a look. :D

The fuel scoops didn't look like what I thought they would:

Those are part of the ships heat dissipation system.

Get away from the sun, drop into normal space, charge your FSD but remain at half throttle so it doesn't jump.

Switch to third person camera and watch them pop up as you heat up.

FDev did not animate or include external fuel scoops on ship models.

Yep, that's why I wanted him to stop scooping and see what happened, they'll keep on spinning while you are hot and stop when you cool down. Different ships have different heat dissipation systems, personally think the FDL's is really cool looking, but the Cutter has to have the most awesome looking one to date.

I love the detail on the FdL, even how the light from the fuel scoops flickers on the fuselage. Does anyone know what the circular dorsal hatch is?

Edit - those are the FdLs heat sinks, not fuel scoops, apparently.

Then noice, FDL has spinning radiators. Why are they spinning though? spinning will not make them radiate heat faster. If they were heat sinks and convecting heat in an atmosphere, sure but radiating in a vacuum?

That...is not the fuel scoops, it is the heat sinks which also open and close when you get near the sun because your heat rises, so yeah.

Fuel scoops are an internal module, no model, though from what I remember they do take advantage of heat sinks, or at least that's what some have indicated, that it is an 'addition' to heat sinks where when they open, they also let in the hydrogen. But absolutely no idea if its lore correct or not.

FDL design is a bit over the top, I'm guessing this is just following the design and is "because they can be spinning"

Agreed. 8chars

Rule of cool man, they do look cool, therefore, do it! Spinning in atmo, as you said, yes, more effective, possibly, but in vacuum, nope...but it looks good so let em spin.

Fuel scoops would be nothing but openings somewhere, that's it, any moving parts would really be internal except for coverings over the openings. Since we have so many different sizes of possible scoops any given ship can fit, not really worth the time and work to create ALL those possible sized openings. And if they did one generic one size fits all opening on each ship, we all know people would be on here whining about it, so just don't bother.

Hmm - interesting if they are the radiators then, as in space you can only lose energy via radiation. I'll have to check this out next time.

Yeah, they're definitely radiators (I fly an FdL, so I know what I'm on about :p); quite why they spin is beyond me, but I suppose it's to do with the whole 'fancy bounty hunter ship' thing that the Fdl is rocking.

You can't see fuel scoops when they're deployed, for some reason.

The good ole Eagles cooling system, the covers open and the "fans" spin along with FDL like turrets on the bottom
