General / Off-Topic SPOILERS ALLOWED Star Wars Last Jedi SPOILERS ALLOWED

Thought I'd start a *SPOILER* Last Jedi/Star Wars discussion for people who have seen the film to discuss.

So who's seen it what did you think?

Poor Luke has aged 40 years; because that is how long we have been buying the Chinese plastic junk and waiting for this to end.

Lovely show. On par with the original trilogy for strongly entertaining space operaism. Gonna have to watch it a few dozens times more I reckon. Was worried after VII, but episode VIII gave me A New Hope.

Fun lightsaber fights. Luke actually takes up a proper stance, and shows that winning is best done by deceit - never play your opponents game!

And the Millennium Falcon is now a chicken coop.

:D S

I've seen it and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!

There's so many jaw dropping scenes, it felt like a Star Wars like no other.

Oh and the bombers at the start could be one of my favourite ever Star Wars vehicles, thought they were B-wings for a moment and then "ohh my godddd something new!!!!".

Mega film, can't wait to see it again!!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Nope.

It just was not very good. High on visual spectacle and low actual story. All flash and no substance. Few good moments nut waaaaay too long.

Isn't that what almost all movies are nowadays? "Visual Spectacle" How many star wars movies? and they can't even compare to the tv series, BSG

It looks like The Last Jedi sucks and is worse than the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. TLJ could be the worst Star Wars movie in history. I don't want to bother to watch it in cinemas. :(

The Mass Media critics who get paid to review this movie are lying with their universal praise. A huge chunk of Star Wars fans dislike, despise this movie.

Last Jedi Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Is Lower Than Justice League

The Force Awakens is essentially a re-imagined Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977). I dislike that it copied major story line elements from the original trilogy, but it was still entertaining and the characters had depth to care about.

What's worse is Disney appointed Rian Johnson to make the next trilogy from scratch. They really should get rid of Johnson after this disaster.

This film brought balance to the force, in that it was both good and bad at the same time.

liked how it was trying to impart greater meaning that you dont have to just kill people and blow yourself up to fight a war.

As someone who has watched the cartoon Star Wars rebels, it ties in with what has been said in the last series, that survival is a win.

It's certainly more prevalent than I would prefer. Hey I love spectacle, but it has to be married to a good story and characters. It has to have proper pacing and tone.

Last Jedi is suffered from a lot of common mistakes these days in that it is not well told. I lost count of the times I rolled my eyes watching this. I was bored during the action scenes, laughed at the poignant scenes, and was constantly scratching my head at the plot holes and internal inconsistencies.

It was a mess.

It looks like for me SW ended at Return of the Jedi - not liking any of the new movies to be honest, especially Force Awakens and this one. Visually they nailed it once again but the plot holes, characters, cast - not my cup of tea I`m afraid.

I absolutely loved it! Complete misdirection by the trailers (always a bonus), half of it being a very tight road movie and the tie fighter attack music from A New Hope :D

And as someone whose job involves seabird conservation, I absolutely loved the porgs! Cute and adorable without being annoying.

My gut reaction upon exiting the cinema... Disappointed.

My answer after a day or so... I'm going to have to see it again.

* SPOILERS AHEAD *

The Last Jedi has some neat things going for it and is rammed full of ideas (maybe to many). I particularly liked the way Rey and Kylo's characters develop through the length of the film. There is a strong emphasis that the two central antagonists are effectively cut from the same cloth. The fact that either is of the light or the dark is purely down to the choices they have made along the way, with their innate power emphasising the impact of these choices but not actually defining them. Interestingly the film moves hard to remove the force as an excuse for either of these characters actions. The revelation of Rey's parentage (and Luke's failure as a teacher) effectively leaves her as a free agent who sits on a knife edge as her emotions ebb back and forth. Conversely Kylo, after rejecting Luke's training and the teachings of the light almost goes as far as doing the same with Snoke and the teachings of the dark in the latter stages of the film. As a result I genuinely have no clue how things will play out in part three, which is actually a rarity in this series. The lack of strict black or white morality in The Last Jedi is a real breath of fresh air, if not more than a bit disconcerting given what we've come to expect from these films.

That being said this film has huge problems. It is over long (there are entire scenes that lead nowhere and add nothing to our understanding of characters or the story), massively unfocused (Snoke is never explored in any detail and killed off before his impact can be explained, while Finn may as well have not appeared in the film at all, his story being almost completely inconsequential), and at times almost felt like an SNL parody rather than the next instalment in the franchise (flying Leia, _that_ moment with Luke and the lightsaber, not to mention the core conceit of the story being a slow motion chase straight out of Spaceballs).

It's a real Marmite film and I can see why it is splitting opinions so thoroughly. I'm not quite ready to say that this makes it a bad film, however it was definitely not what I was expecting (and not wholly in a good way) and didn't leave me with the high I was looking for and IMO all of the bast Star Wars films achieve. For me Star Wars has always been as much about the tone of the story telling as much as any of the specifics of the world being depicted, and on that front this film is resolutely trying to do something very different and as a result left me feeling somewhat unsatisfied.

They played it safe and came up with another borefest. Episode 3 still reigns second in the franchise in my opinion. Empire is the best of course.

It's not great. Seems a lot of shoe-horning and not much actual story. I felt it was written for younger audience than the 40-somethings of the original trilogy. Call me selfish, but that upset me a bit. No explanation for Snoke. Kylo flawed badly as serious threat (he's going to turn for goodness sake). Leia able to survive in space unconscious? err no. Many, many moments of 007-style suspended belief - too many. Lot to do in the final film. For me it was poor. Fab action scenes etc. but Star Wars is so much more. It's a rich story. This was poor on story.

I get that but I'm not sure it would satisfy a younger audience either. It's far to long and unfocused and for all the Kid Friendly extras (Porgs?!) I think they'd just end up getting bored. The more I think about it the more convinced I am that this films problems stem from it trying to be all things to all people. As the adage goes you just end up disappointing everybody.

Too short or too long, it is just another marketing tool, to sell another few billion dollars of, Chinese plastic junk.
