Spontaneous Combustion

Ok, weirdness is a foot I was inside a hanger (not on the outer pad. I requested launch, got taken to the surface, disconnected, undercarriage up, lights off, and began my journey to the exit of the star port. I got about halfway, and sparks started coming from my dashboard.... I checked the systems console, and my heat was over 200%..... and I exploded just outside the port.

What on earth caused that to happen. I know the heat was the cause of the explosion, but as I was docked at the time and my engines were off, what generated that much heat in such a short amount of time???

I did not even have a town crier bell on board.... ;)

Why would anyone put silent running or eject cargo on voice attack? It would be like putting self destruct right in the middle of your maneuvering thruster keys.

Heck I have silent running on my HOTAS setup so it requires two buttons to be activated, one of which is the most awkward hat button to use.

I do wish commanders would bestow their wisdom in a less belittling fashion. We are not all born with the complete knowledge of the best setups and the best key binds to use. I come to this forum to help me learn about my situations. not be struck down for doing something that they might think is a foolish thing to do.

not to my knowledge.... but for safety, I think I will remove that command from Voice Attack... in case it did enable that command without me knowing.

yeah I did this at first. turns out when my boy shouted daddy from a distance I would heat up and explode.

1) disable silent running command on voice attack or
2) ensure a massive alarm bell sound effect plays when enabled in case you did not here your ship comp says silent running enabled.

personally I have remove silent running form VA and as the other fellow here stated, has set up a two button config to ensure I can not activate it by mistake.

Take my approach, since there's the problem of overheating plus silent running by itself isn't all that great.

Have your VA silent running command (stealth or go dark or whatever) not only hit the silent running toggle, but have it shut down the drive and other components. This stops the heat buildup, and actually takes you off the scanner, unlike silent running by itself.

Oh no... haha !!!

I have removed it now as you both have suggested, I always wear headphones when playing ED which is why I am still unsure as to this being the cause... I would have heard the command said back to me (as that is how I have VA set-up)... Anyway I am just glad I had enough money on me to keep my ship, I lost the cargo unfortunately, but I can live with that.

Now that sounds like a plan, I will experiment with that... thanks for the suggestion.

It might not be the cause - it could be a bug. Just seemed to me to be the most obvious cause of overheating if trying to frameshift/hyperspace can be discounted.

Q & A Time

....not only hit the silent running toggle, but have it shut down the drive and other components. This stops the heat buildup, and actually takes you off the scanner, unlike silent running by itself.

I ask the following 3 questions, as I am learning new things here. I do not know much about the systems page of the right console, I also ask this as I am not in the game at present to test.

Q1: if I drop of the scanner in the way you suggest, and launch missiles at a target, would I (the ship) become visible again on the radar, or would just the missiles show up?

Q2: When the main drive is offline, do I loose all ability to move the ship by thruster vectoring up/down/forward/backward/left/right, or just the hyperspace/frameshift part?

Q3: (a followup to Q2) Could I effectively fire at a target while in this advanced (advanced being your version) silent running mode, and then change position / location and effectively increase my chances of remaining hidden from retaliation?

Hope this makes sense.... and thanks to everyone who answers.

As it's about heat, the missiles show, BUT other pilots can see (eyeball) you plain as day, and you'd make yourself obvious. You'll also have no shields.

Q2: When the main drive is offline, do I loose all ability to move the ship by thruster vectoring up/down/forward/backward/left/right, or just the hyperspace/frameshift part?

You can manoeuvre, but it's p a i n f u l l y s l o w in every direction

Try it, it's beta and meant for testing. We'll all be wiped in a few days anyway.

Interesting, the plan was more to track another larger ship out of the docking port, like an Anaconda (as they would be showing up on the radar), launch an attack on a third party in front of the anaconda, and make the third party believe the anaconda sent the missiles their way. But I see now this is nice in theory, but would not work if I could not match the speed of the ship I am trying to hide behind.

Oh well.. sneaky plan version 2.1 failed in the planning. :)

Thanks Yaffle

Why don't you give it a go on the 28th? You have nothing to lose at all assuming we all get wiped back to the beginning.
