Spooky find at YAKABUGAI (Spoiler) - Gamma 1.00

Aye ...unsanctioned outposts ... they are all out there.
In Beta 3.5 I made a fortune doing missions for them (and no, I don´t talk about piracy missions ... rather missions like shipping gold to other systems)

I had a "spooky" experience last night:

I had jumped into an unexplored system to do a scan (and make some credits) which turned out to be a two star system. After completing the scan (no other bodies, so the find was a bust), I saw a USS very close to one of the stars that I decided to investigate. I normally avoid them as I invariably run across somebody who wants to make my life hell, but in this case I thought it may be something interesting as it was close to the star.

After dropping out to sublight speed, I fly around and notice the remains of a partially disintegrated vessel and a number of cargo canisters a quick scan of them revealed that they contained rare art. I scooped up what I could and warped back to occupied space to sell the art. Unfortunately, as they were marked as stolen I could only sell them on the black market getting half the market rate but all told I made just 8,000Cr less than the fine I picked up for carrying stolen goods plus a criminal record into the bargain :)

So why "spooky", you ask? Well, my mind started to wander about the cause of the ship disintegration. I deduced piracy was unlikely as the art was worth a bit a pirate worth their salt would have found a way to scoop everything. So, was it a misjump or some other failure? Possibly - the system is mid way between populated systems. Was it a trader or delivery to a museum somewhere (as in one the Elite short stories)? Again, possibly. Then another thought occurred: maybe it was a luxury vessel (forgot to try and identify it) such as an Orca that was taking first class passengers on a sight-seeing mission and got too close to the star? What then of the passengers and the terror they experienced? Was it like Titanic with everyone panicking?

I suppose it was not really spooky as such but the moment your imagination kicks in, it doesn't half make the game feel rich.

Maybe they hit an ice asteroid?
