Spot the Differences (Where are my Asteroids?)

So lately, as in one-month-lately, i was mining LTDs a lot on my PC account (no, don't ask why).

Then last weekend i decided to fill with LTDs a Cutter on my XB account with the idea to sell it when prices are good.
So I did, but while i was in the ring i had a strong impression that there are waaay fewer asteroids on XB - that means more noticeable travel between them and less clumping - than on PC

So today i did some tests.
I placed my ships basically in the same position in the ring that is: middle hotspot, 149 meters from center, positioned so the target of middle hotspot was impressed over the target of the 3rd hotspot (the one closest to the planet)

Then i took the screenshots, both at the same time, first one is on PC, the second one is on XB.

Spot the differences.

Is it normal?
I mean, it would seem normal that on XB1s to have lower details than on PC, but erm... less asteroids?
Jokingly, i could say that i payed for the same Galaxy that i have on PC yet it seems that i'm getting less of it.

What other differences could be in rendering the space objects in the Galaxy?

As a professional software developer, my guess is that reducing the number of moving objects in the ring noticeably improved XB performance to the point that the tradeoff of less detail was worth the performance improvement for XB players. Rings are perhaps the most object intensive area of the game so I don't expect that FD made this tradeoff elsewhere.

It does look like density and maybe even draw distance were reduced. Most likely for performance reasons as ocflyer already said.

Consoles, while often being quite powerful, almost always seem to skimp on ram compared to gaming PCs. I often wonder how different my experience with it would be, if my Xbone had twice the ram, and an SSD instead of a spinner HD.

To get a bit more serious, my jokes (mostly) aside...

When I purchased ELITE in 2017 on PS4, I bought the game for a Standard PS4. I then heard of the PS4 Pro, and was very much interested in a lot of visual/framerate upgrades that were coming to games I owned at the time.

I had been reading of the improvements to ELITE, especially shadows, and bit the bullet. The upgrades, although subtle, are quite significant. Noticing extra effects when jumping, being interdicted, exploring rings, near stars etc. The list goes on and on....

I would love to know how this compares on PS4 against the PC (master race, all hail immediately, or surrender now), and Xbox as posted.

Well that explains a lot. I couldn't figure out how some players were averaging so many tons per mining hour. There are often large gaps of no asteroids playing on XB.

Indeed, id say that on XB there are less than half asteroids than on PC.
And on PC there are quite large clumps of tightly packed asteroids - i only have to turn my Conda and i can graze another asteroid, no flying.

Very interesting findings, great work. As a member of the Console Miners Union, I've already contacted my MP. :)

When I was playing on the original XB1, there were some terrible performance issues with rings after one patch, eventually Frontier fixed that. Was your test on the original Xbox One, or was it on Xbox One S/X? I've been playing on Xbox One X since 2017 and I'm curious if the rock count was increased for that hardware.

It will be interesting to see it the rock count increases on the next-generation consoles - they should, really, considering the beefier GPUs, CPUs and faster memory, but I'm not Frontier.

Major performance issues appeared post January patch. Before that it was really smooth.

You should try doing mapped mining on the Xbox and on the PC see if the map is correct for both versions.

I cba with maps - but from my screenshots it is clear there are, i'd say, only half of the asteroids - so a map done on PC will be useless on consoles.
I do wonder if a screenshot of XB1X or PS4 Pro will be different than the one on slower consoles (XB1s or PS4 standard)
