Here's a thought... A Squadron Shipyard!
CMDRs can "deposit" ships in the Squadron Shipyard, for others to use temporarily.
Ships from the shipyard can not be outfitted. They can be viewed, and livery can be applied or changed, but nothing else.
All livery is stripped when depositing, or returning a ship.
Any rank locks remain in place, so you still need the required rank to fly it.
When loaning a ship from the shipyard, you prepay it's insurance rebut cost. So you can only loan what you can afford, think of it as a deposit.
(This is to stop CMDRs taking the ships and totalling them, and thus losing the ship entirely)
The CMDR is responsible for any damage, fines or bounties to pay.
If you die, without any legal issues, you're returned to your original ship, and you lose your deposit, the loaned ship is returned to the shipyard.
With legal issues, you pay those on death, and the ship is returned to the shipyard.
The squadron leader has to assign a lease time limit (in real time), which is from 1 hour to 7 days maximum.
After this limit, docking anywhere with a shipyard will return you to your original ship, and you will be charged the transfer fees for both you and the leased ship. (Although transfer is instant for you.)
If you're logged off, while docked when the time is up, you'll log in to be returned to your original ship.
Repairs, refuel and rearming aren't possible once the time limit is up.
If you leave the squadron while in a loaned ship, you immediately lose your deposit, and you become wanted for theft.
Docking permission is always denied, and insurance will rebuy the ship to the Squadron Shipyard. So that CMDR is stuck in that ship.
So, don't put ships with a fuel scoop or AMFU in the Squadron Shipyard, and no one will be able to use the ship for too long.
Now, this can be used for many many things, including squadron events!
Want a fair fight or race? Build a load of identical ships, and loan them out.
You can also let people try out new ships or configurations, to see if they like it.
