Squadrons and carriers

Squadrons are coming with Beyond Chapter Four. The Fleet Carrier is delayed, probably coming in 2019.

Frontier should look at this other game called X4 Foundations and see what they can add to make Fleet Carriers better.

Squadrons go live in the next few weeks, currently in beta but fleet carriers were pushed back but not shelved.

Squadrons will be arriving in 3.3 but carriers are currently indefinitely delayed.

"Indefinitely delayed". I'm imagining what my company clients would say if we were to give them that line in respect of their investment returns. The standards FDev are held to are very, very low.

wait, how is disrespect measured when you are not playing this game?

What investments did Frontier "clients" make in respect to the carrier function specifically?

Time, money. The fact people just accept failure after failure and still fork our for ship skins to fund their next franchise is...an interesting business model.

The fact that this is still -by far- the best space sim ever developed invalidates any complaint about their business model.

And about carriers... the failure was telling people they were coming in the first place. If they don't tell anything... failure. If they tell... failure too. It's not easy developing a game like this and keeping people happy.

While this is a dangerous sentiment (it encourages complacency), FD don't seem like the types to sit on their laurels, and it is a true fact...so yeh, hard to argue with that, in the current climate where so many companies get it horribly wrong.

Well firstly, that's subjective. I personally don't think it's anywhere near realistic enough to be a sim. It's a space game but many would argue Eve is better or the X games. It's also probably not the most commercially successful. Lastly, I never complained that their business model isn't working. It demonstrably is. But it has been aided by the fact Elite fans will continually absorb slow development and poor mechanics while paying for skins etc. Everyone would do that of they could get away with it, FDev are just taking advantage of the situation and have secured somel ucrative franchises out of it, so fair play to them.

I was one of those who supported this game. The 3.3 update is the final straw for me. I checked in this morning to see what last night's stream was about and noticed this thread. I was saying all year carriers will be the game changer for me as I really had hopes for it changing the dynamic for player groups (my player group is the only thing that gives me a reason to play the game). FDev have seen the speculation and excitement on the forums about carriers all year. I don't know when they realised they wouldn't be delivering them but it certainly wasn't the 11th hour when the cancellation was announced. They let players like me put time and effort into the game thinking this development was coming knowing we were wasting our time. I view that as extremely discurteous and a downright disdainful treatment of loyal customers. FDev, for me, have lost the right to any benefit of doubt. And i put a lot into this game. It feels unpleasant to have the relationship end in such a bitter way but it is what it is.

Not that i'm annoyed or anything lolz.

I don't disagree with anything you wrote, but I disagree with the outcome. Fleet carriers were never going to change the game. A station to call home, that was mobile, and could probably be upgraded by feeding resources (increasing what outfitting is available, for example), would definitely have provided a fun distraction for about an hour and a minorly useful tool for the future (for moving squadron resources around the bubble), but game changing? Such that it would make or break for the game for you? In the face of SUCH a vast raft of improvements over the last 12 months? I'm surprised is all. :)

Actually the fact that Elite is the best space sim ever only speaks about the incompetence of the competition. Compared to flight simulators like IL2 and DCS World it's actually quite mediocre. It's like saying that Microsoft Windows is the most advanced piece of software ever, because it's on almost every computer.

And about carriers... the failure was telling people they were coming in the first place.

Agreed on that.
