Squadrons and Wings. Dropped the ball.......

Firstly i got to say i really do like this update with the new lighting, exploration, mining and so on...

BUT

Squadrons had serious potential to benefit pvp wings but it seems it is the same old system and squadrons is just to provide information. Is there a plan to add to this in the future fdev?

Wings are still limited to 4 players. If you are in a full wing fight and fellow squadron members want to join you there appears to be no way to facilitate this other than dropping from the wing to 'anchor' them in. Meanwhile while you're messing around doing that you're taking fire. Not to mention the potential instancing issues with squadron members in different countries.

Thoughts?

Squadrons should have the ability to manage multiple wings within the squadron. Each wing should have its own squadron beacon to help guide them in.

I'm full of bright ideas like this fdev and don't live too far away if you would like to hire me.

I'd hoped Squadrons would faciliated loads of new gameplay, including Squadron mining, Powerplay and PvP (eg: opposing Powerplay Squadrons being able to take on a task opposing each other with the game orchestrating PvP instances between them) - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ron-quot-Role-quot-and-more-involved-gameplay

Can but hope this comes along later on - Maybe Fleet Carriers will bring something in with it? But TBH I doubt it.

I strongly, sincerely doubt the game will ever stably support more than 4-person wings without dedicated host servers - and hence, you won't be seeing Fdev trying.

I've been playing Warframe a long while now, another peer-to-peer network game, and I would not call it reliable. It's acceptable given its PvE format, but that's one of many reasons their PvP mode is entirely ignored by nearly the entirety of their player base.

Instancing 4 wing members against an opposing wing of 4 is already a gamble... even just getting all 4 members of the same wing into the same instance is unreliable. Instancing squadrons consisting of multiple wings is probably nigh impossible. I wouldn't even want to try.

I enquired about this in a thread also. I genuinely thought Squadrons was a new feature to address the limitation of four per wing and larger scale PvP engagements. But nope.

I asked that tagging be allowed to ignore friendly fire from tagged friendlies too, to stop this everybody is a red foe in the larger fights, caper.

Well, for my short impression the squadrons only bind commanders to player groups which makes it difficulty, maybe impossible to get them for a different business than for their current squadron.

The current player groups may hurry to get as many not binded commanders as possible into their squadron because they know: once in the squadron, there may be no reason to join a different one anymore...

Seems to me squadrons is just an in game alternative to INARA. Just like the codex is an in game alternative to the Elite wiki. People have asked why we have to go to an outside web page for content and this is the first step to bringing it in game. Maybe/hopefully they'll expand on it but as of right now that's what we have.

I joined a squadron today and I'm a bit nonplussed about it to be honest. I was kind of expecting them to be like guilds in other games (because they were referred to as such in the live streams a few times) with their own member list and dedicated chat channel and what not, where you can keep in contact with group members, but all I seem able to do is see what systems the squadron are currently engaged in... It tells me there are 15 members, but it doesn't tell me who they are or where they are and there seems to be no way to contact anyone to find out what they're up to and maybe join in with some squad based wing play, as there doesn't seem to be an in-squadron chat... It just looks like some sort of scoreboard with a list of systems and no interaction between members.

I admit I don't get it... Can someone please enlighten me? Seems a bit of a wasted potential.

Squadrons turns out to be a throwaway feature implemented just enough to be able to say they did it. One more bullet point to add to the website and steam store page. Don't expect any further development or support going forward.

I was very surprised there is no squadron chat channel... You can't really have a general conversation via a notice board. Is this due to a technical limitation?

EDIT: Ignore... I was confused by the clunky UI. Seems you have to press tab within your comms panel to select squadron chat as there is no icon for it...
