Srv acceleration bug?

Don't know if I'm doing it wrong, but I must confess SRV acceleration behaviour makes the srv experience extremely disgusting and nonsense.
Have I wrong the controls?

srvAccel.png
I use the mouse wheel to stablish my acceleration, (the point in the speed bar, as the gas controls in the ship). My point is, if I've just move the wheel one time, I should have (as I understand) a 12.5% of total speed, another move forward, 25%, etc... but what I got is SRV accelerating and going beyond my mark in the acceleration bar as if Dominic Toretto was trying to beat somebody, as if this Srv were trying to get released in the next Grand Turismo. Why can't I really control the amount of max speed I want to move myself!?
I'm tired to smashing agains trees and rocks with the minimal wheel touch!.
What am I doing wrong? Its a bug? or I am not understanding how Srv controls work?

The SRV throttle has 2 modes.

1) Drive Assist On (the default). In this mode the throttle sets a maximum speed, and your SRV will attempt to maintain that speed no matter what. It is only useful for slow speeds and fairly flat terrain. Slowly inch the throttle higher until you get the speed you want. Most people find this mode hard to control. I use it under certain circumstances when I want the SRV to just drive itself along while I look for biologicals.

2) Drive Assist Off. In this mode the throttle acts like a go-cart throttle. As long as you hold it down the SRV accelerates. When you let off on the throttle the SRV slows down. Most people find this mode easier to understand and control (just don't try to go TOO fast, you'll spin out unless you really know how the SRV handles).

This is complicated by planets having different terrain, as well as different gravities. In low gravity you can use the thrusters to fly over bumps and hills, and with practice you can remain airborne most of the time. Buckyball racers have a technique they call "flyving" that uses a lot of thrusters.

TLDR; Yes, you are not understanding how the SRV works. Try the different modes and practice a bit, and you'll get the hang of it. Start with Drive Assist Off.

There is a Training mission that lets you drive the SRV so you can practice without danger.

Good luck out there.

fwiw i only use fa on aka cruise control, on terrain that is soooo bad that going over 10m/s is a serious pain and impossible. hardly ever use it tbh

for the most part I am up in the air as it is the fastest way to move the srv, gravity providing...

And ..

There's a lot of this one about at the moment. Is there an issue on the tracker for it? (seems worth upvoting if so).
P.S. I looked and the only issue I could find was from a HOTAS user and I don't think that's the same issue.

It's been a bug since Odyssey launched Alec, and yes it's the same bug using throttle and mouse wheel acceleration (at least it misbehaved in a similar way when I last tested)

Interesting that more people are reporting it again, perhaps suggests there's an influx of new players!

As for a bug report I know there was one waaaay back that got enough votes but was expired after a patch, I've not looked for it since.

@Reaversword No you haven't the wrong controls, and you are NOT doing anything wrong.
The way you expect DA-ON to work with mouse wheel acceleration is the way it should work and the way does still work in Legacy, it's bugged in Odyssey and Horizons 4.0.

Try Drive Assist off, unfortunately incremental mouse wheel speeds do not work with DA-OFF

Edit: Obviously the idea solution would be for FD to fix DA-ON for those who want to use it, specifically the 2 DA-ON problems which are:
- laggy response to throttle changes
- extreme acceleration being applied when throttle change is responded to (faster or slower)

Thanks for the explanation. I'd noticed that the SRV is possible to drive with DA off and not otherwise, but I had no clue what was going on with it.

With drive assist you usually have a sweet spot for good control. Beyond that you quickly lose traction and start spin. Best control is direct mode but experience only tells you when you go too fast. It is as described above and rather busy. Drive assist is for casual cruising. Driect mode for artistic or edge case manouvers.

When Drive Assist On sometimes a bug happens which causes complete runaway throttle. 10% throttle from mouse scroll bar causes 100% throtlle. This isn't normal and can be temporarily fixed by toggling Drive Assist Off/On or relogging.

Be aware that Drive Assist Off also disables the scroll wheel. You must go into keybinds and assign keyboard buttons for throttle. Unlike the scroll wheel which acts like an analog input the keyboard buttons will function as "throttle on" buttons for fwd and rev that you must pulse for desired speed.

Urrr, a bug was introduced in Odyssey. You've played Odyssey?

For those who like me prefer DA-OFF, a Protip: You can set Drive Assist Off by default for the SRV, in the right-hand panel, SRV tab I believe (the equivalent to the Ship tab on that panel).
