SRV: Body with pristine reserves, and now?

Greetings,

Scanning a body told me pristine reserves and landable, so I did and jumped into the SRV. Tried that in multiple systems, and always the same. eventually you find a rock to shoot, but it usually takes ages driving around, often I drove half a tank empty and with luck found two rocks. That's too much time for me to spend driving around for a small output.

Q1. Is there a way to locate areas with higher probability of finding rocks to shoot if there are no geological survery sites?

Q2. I thought, ok. it's a big place, jumped into my ASPx again and went to another spot on the planet, 3 times, same result, endless driving around in your SRV until you find a rock.

Or am I missing something?

Thx!

I can not give you a screenshot, but in my left panel, on the body info, no rings!, it indicates reserves levels. Perhaps I misunderstand something, will check again.

Look for landable bodies with any type of volcanism; they have geological sites. Map those bodies with the Detailed Surface Scanner (=launch the probes at the planet until it's fully scanned). This will reveal the location of said geological sites on the surface. These locations are like buffet tables for the materials the body has.

Have you learned how to interpret the signals on your wavescanner display? That is there to guide you to stuff (outcrops, meteorites, wreckage, caches, etc).

There is WAS a website that illustrates what each type of signal looks and sounds like and what it is for but it seems to be defunct now. This video might help:

After using the FSS which tells you there are X number of geological sites, you then fly over to the planet and use the Detailed Surface Scanner (DSS), this shoots a probe (you’ll need more than one, every ship has an infinite amount), once fully mapped, your nav panel will give you the geological sites as locations, or if you’re close enough, they will show up on the planet surface as little target circles.

Land at one of them, SRV out, shoot, collect, send me ARX.

You can find plenty of outcrops when you learn how to use the wavescanner and drive. It takes some time to learn how to drive at speed over different terrain under various gravity.

Some people swear by geological sites, but i just find a planet with a decently high proportion of what i want and go hunting in the SRV.

Personally, I find planet yields are acceptable close to the rim of craters. Sometimes the terrain is bumpy but careful driving following the wave scanner does the trick.

On flatter planet surfaces (away from craters) the yields appear to be less, but you can drive faster to make up for it. 🤷‍♂️

What you describe is very much the norm for locating materials the wavescanner way.Since the introduction of POI 'farming' has proved so popular for materials gathering, i suspect the old method has fallen largely out of use, but persistence will pay off eventually.
If nothing else you survived an hour or so in the SRV.That's bankable experience.

Yep, I've also noticed that the material yielding rocks are more frequent in and around craters/ravines. Which makes sense in a way; the surface is broken up, exposing the minerals within.

Thanks all! Just had a run on a geo-sites location, buffet table for sure. :) The hint with craters is something I will try too. Must read up on wavescanner as well, I was not aware that this can be used for locating mats. I always thought this is only when you are close to it. It is built per default into SRV, right?

On the hunt for Vanadium.

Thanks for the idea on volcanism, makes sense!

Thanks, I have seen this before, but I must admit though, I never fully understood this video. For example, does the wavescanner point you into the direction you are supposed to drive in your SRV before the location is shown as a white rectangular on your radar?
